I have to disagree with your thoughts - because being able to relate to a tv show, is not about having been in EXACTLY the same circumstances..... it's about having been in circumstances that allow you to appreciate what is happening on the screen.... and anyone who has ever played a game of paintball, no matter under what circumstances, will be able to do that when watching.

Nick
I think Sport Paintball is a massive jump from Rec / Mill-Fantasy Paintball, and I don't think the appeal and or appreciation would be there. Infact paintball looks dead easy, and nothing shown thus far challenges that view. At least mountain biking and BMX look scary / dangerous, getting a hit off the glove with a half inch ball just ain't exciting, and really doesn't challenge the difficulty circuits (the realisation is different, but not viewing).

As you say, it maybe a very gradual process, but if TV is the short term goal or is needed for the future financial viability, then format tinkering is going to be required. And that will involve catering to audience "bloodlust".

Inclusion of Legion makes it interesting, and now that Dynasty is Effect shouldn't really surprise anyone should it. The introduction of grudge or good versus bad matches may make for a little viewer interest, but doesn't detract from the underlying game being boring (as is F1, but then you have your team / driver grudge matches too).

Yes I do

Whatever the reason people watch F1, you do agree they make an effort to show you only the worthwhile stuff, even when broadcast live?
(Short enough answer for you ? :D)

And, quite obviously, producers of paintball shows, would also only show the "worthwhile stuff" - what would be the point of showing something that is not worthwhile? :D

Nick

From three days of filming at a major event you get, if your lucky, 30mins of usuable footage. That simply isnt economically viable to make television programmes. Paintball will continue to be just another highlights package. If there was more to it, why do you thik they feel the need to cover each and every dvd in music.

Music is alaways used to drive a piece through a stagnant part and distract the viewer from what could be a mundane section. If it was strong enough it wouldnt need to be hidden under a loud soundtrack.

Obviously I'm jumping in to this on 26's and Nick's side but only to toss a couple of extra ideas out. Oh, and Duffy is just bitter that peeps got no love for boys in short pants riding around on woodsy trails but instead go for the flashy kids pedalling along in the pelaton.

Anyway-- 1) TV is rapidly becoming a niche market. The definition of successful television has changed and PB is ideally situated to reach the absolutely primo audience.
2) TV makes PB more accessible and I don't mean simply to potentially bigger audience. I mean TV has the ability to do all the things that can make watching PB entertaining to more people. America's pastime, football, is way more fun to watch on TV than live in a stadium. Better views of the action, instant replays of the big catches and the hard hits--everything that peeps like about football is enhanced by being on TV. That's cus football is a complex game with a lot of guys running around hitting each other for a few seconds at a time surrounding by standing around. Translate that to Xball and yes, it requires a knowledeable and skilled crew to capture properly but so what, you gotta start someplace. 2 minute breaks between points are naturals for last point highlights or the commerical time outs. Breaking down points in highlights and instant replays has an educational factor. Eventually skilled direction will more often than not present the critical action as it happens for the viewer, etc. It's not an easy or an overnight transition and the widely held notion that TV means money is slightly backwards--as more and more money become part of Paintball then TV becomes almost inevitable.

PS--no, Jay, he's not. Broadcasting F1 live there is no option about showing only the cool stuff--there is no cool stuff excepting the odd pass or fiery crash. What Nick is saying is that the enjoyment of the race isn't dependent exclusively on the mundane observable factoids of 30 cars going round and round and to reduce watching Paintball or F1 to simply that is to misjudge what makes Sport appealing.
btw, F1 street courses are awesome to go to in person even though you can only watch a fraction of the course and action.

I have seen it recently both on ESPN, Eurosport and Sky Sports....... I believe.... ???

It may not be one of the big 4 (NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox).... but it IS on tv regularly ??

- Point being, that a little goes a long way.... because paintball IS afterall a marginal sport in this day and age.

Nick
Nick, it is on regularly, yes...and I am not disputing Paintball can and will get a not disimililar amount of coverage - it is the nature of the coverage, and the way it is portrayed, that I find interesting - and it also happens to be the root difference between the NXL strategy and the NPPL strategy I think - Paintball the sport Vs Paintball the extreme sport.

And Cow, peloton schmeleton - mountain biking gets a lot more coverage than the roadies do.

Music montages of random shots are also a lot easier to put together, requiring a lot less skill and time, which i feel is a more important factor in its use in paintball DVD's, rather than the subject matters itself. In short they do it cos its easy not because its the only option.

Yes there is. Why oh why do you think they tell their camera crews to focus on cars X and Y, rather than number one? Because X and Y is where the potential for drama is. I don't think you understood what I was getting at.

As for your BTW, any game is more fun to watch in real life, even football. All that instant replay hoopla you also get in the stadium on the big screens, plus there is the festival atmosphere.
