Holy crap...

1) Yeah, what, you can't return e-mails?

2) Yeah, I know, but what I'm ultimately getting at is that if the match I saw between the Oakland Assassins and Detroit Strange at 'Cup were shown (properly) on television and a non-player saw it, I think they could easily become engrossed. Right now it would just make said person interested in potentially playing, not necessarilly going out and buying a paintball video, but hey, if he starts playing then he's no different from the people picking them up now.

3) Listen, as you know I have a decent amount of contempt for the human race, but I really think you, and the many, many others who share your opinion are simply not giving people enough credit. Joe Public will more than likely figure out that this Olly guy is reloading his gun while running then sticking his gun into another guys back. It isn't rocket science. You ever see Platoon ? Remember when, oh crap, what's his face was running through the woods by himself cutting down NVA en route to his extraction point a la Lasoya? Essentially, this is what will register with someone who's never seen paintball before, it would really take someone exceptional to only see a guy running with a stick, you know, like Piper exceptional. Dude, when was the last time you saw a Paintball video? The 300FPS video from Derder has all sorts of very clear shots of people getting their heads shot off.

4) Gotta admit, not a huge fan of most Paintball soundtracks, although I am a bit of a music snob maybe. You're a lost cause if you didn't atleast like PUSH, there's nothing I can even say to you. It's like arguing over religion at this point.

5) Dude, you need to get over here and watch some good paintball, then you'll see things how I see them. The NXL finals, you know, when they finally meant something, teams were actually being eliminated, were outstanding. Detroit fighting their way through as the underdog needed no editing. The see-saw battles were exciting, and all those games that come down to the final seconds, well, what more can you ask for. I really think I'm onto something here, you're just watching boring ass Paintball on your side of the Atlantic. I doubt I'd want to watch it myself. I'd probably prefer to watch people I've never even heard of play Arena Football.

6)Oh, and your comparisons to BMX, skateboarding, all that stuff, have you, or anyone you know ever watched an entire one of those competitions? It's decent eye-candy, but that's really all it is, and like all sweets, you can't live on it. Hell, even that guy that does back-flips on his dirtbike, that's unassailably cool, but you know, a couple times is good for me. I think I could go the rest of my life withoout seeing that again and be okay. I'm sorry to be a broken record, but the drama of teams fighting it out for first place has a lot more staying power for me than guys trying to one up each others' tricks.

Purely my opinion mind you;)
1) Haven't seen any mails from you in a while.... You got the right address?
2) That's one match out of how many that's actually worth watching? (and that's worth watching to you, a biased person, because you play paintball....)
3)No comparison. In platoon whoever got shot had spurts of blood popping out of them, and then fell to the ground, never to rise again. Dude's name was Elias by the way (played by Willem Dafoe). In paintball, whoever gets shot raises his hand and exits the field. Wow.
What I'm trying to make you aware of is that even if Olly, Chris or whoever does stick his gun in someone's pack, what it will look like is somebody poking a stick (the barrel) at somebody else. No exploding bodyparts, no dead people.
4) There are plenty of better DVD's than Push. Push was overly dramatic. Or was trying to be dramatic, with cliche cinematographic tricks. Combined with a soundtrack that's not very aggressive it gets really old, really fast.
5) I'll make sure that the likes of Dynasty, Russian Legion, and all the other top pro teams that visited Europe this season, will be made aware of the fact that they are boring. In short, you are so not onto something here.
I got footage of a RL player braking all the way to the fifty, dipping and dodging, not once stopping, and all the while firing his gun hideously accurate. As a player I admire this guy's skills, and it almost makes me cream my shorts. I am also very acutely aware that to anybody that's not a player, all this is is just some dude in a pajama running like he's drunk, pointing a gun with no discernable effect.
6) To answer your opening question: Yes I have. I have been part of the organisation of a skateboarding event where the likes of Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Jason Lee and many others showed up to strut their stuff. The reason I brought it up, is because I know exactly what I'm talking about.
Now, having said that, I do agree on the eye candy statement. However, the game of paintball has even less of that. You'll need an immense amount of footage to get a decent 30 minute highlight show.
Your statement about the drama involved may be on to something, if it weren't for the fact that this will never materialise in the sort of programme PB will most likely be on tv. Can't work up the drama in 30 minutes.... Or you have to cut back on the actual game footage, and turn it into a real life soap, but I doubt that'll be too succesful.

1) Uh, I thought so... e-mail me something later.

2) Ack, I don't think that's it at all. How much of a damn football game is worth watching? There's so much dead time, and, hey, look, I can oversimplify too: "All regular Joe will see is some guys drunkenly running into each other with weird protective equipment on... wow" I could do that with ANY sport! "Basketball's just a bunch of tall guys throwing a ball around... wow!"

I know, THE BALL! With the size of X-Ball fields you don't really need to spread your atention that much to keep up.

3) I think we'll just have to disagree there. I think big explosions of paint and the spasms of the recipients does alright. True though, we could use more flying body parts. (Willem Dafoe, thank you;) )

4) Jay, you ignorant slut. There's no accounting for taste I suppose.

5) I didn't say there weren't any good teams over there, Jerky, I said it was boring paintball. Watching Legion destroy everyone can only be enjoyable for how long? If the game's over at halftime, then you're going to want to move on. I think you're just trying to get me pummeled.

6) Well, I still maintain that, although their tricks are truly amazing, it gets old pretty darn quickly.

I still think you're not giving the public enough credit. I've had family and friends come out to catch tournaments, yes, boring 7-man, and I explain the basics along the way, and for the most part their interested. Would they be there if I wasn't? Hell no, but the thing is they eventually get into it. They start differentiating the good teams from the bad, they pick players they like, and players they want to see get bunkered, hard. I'm just saying there's something there, if us dumb Paintball players can stand to watch this stuff, then what's stopping other people?

I'm afraid we'll keep circling around that. I simply think an X-Ball match could be interesting to a regular person, shown in its entirety, like a football game, and you don't seem to think people would get it. Is that where we're at?

I hope your Tai Chi has kicked in by the time I see you.

What're you talking about anyway, the video thing? What kind of point were you trying to make? If you're trying to discredit me I think you're okay, everyone considers me the local derelict as it is, so hey, bravo for you... Bully.

Duff: Paintball suitable for tv? (if you side with Jay it's because you're afraid he'll beat you up, everyone knows... it's okay)

Thanks for using me as an example of entertaining PB.

All it takes is for someone to tell me they're going to photo or video it. Or give me a new gun.

(I actually didn't land on my face in Amsterdam; I landed on my gun which slapped me in the face and knocked my goggles off.)

1. I got my new sword yesterday - you can be my sharpness tester.

2. Yes, it was a genuine question as to how many units you think the average Paintball DVD sells.

3. Suitable for TV like a traditional sport? No.

1) With the quality of those things nowadays I'd be more worried about you slapping me with it that slicing.

2) I have some inside info' that probably wouldn't be great to put up on a public forum... and actually, it isn't anything you don't know.

3) I knew it. You buckle, like a belt.

Come on, give me the run-down... is it Jay's stick theory, is that what it is?

You going to actually write anything this month or just argue semantics on here all night :p

My POV - Paintball highlite reels - great, paintball match would suck unless you had VERY good commentators and sky high production values, otherwise it'll be half arsed and frankly suck.

I think Manning could use some help here.... because Jay just thrives on playing the devils advocate.....

I'M WITH MANNING !

(Jay - sometimes the cup IS half FULL ;))

The target audience for a paintball tv show, is the people that have tried playing paintball..... and they number what ? - 50 million people - or something ? - And the number just keeps growing.

ANYONE who has ever played a game of paintball, will be able to appreciate the skill level of the best players in our sport.....

YES - it IS a valid point that it would help paintball, if the paint shot was visible to spectators and viewers..... and it doesn't take that much to accomodate that need.... dark surface, dark baricades, light/white paint.... job done.... provided the cameras used are set up for high speeds.

Take Formula 1 racing for example.... Yes, a lot of people watch it hoping to see a crash... but when poled, the majority of the viewers that sit through 2-3 hours of cars running around and around and around, with not much exitement going on, watch it because they can relate to someone driving a super car very fast and with skill..... because the viewers have drivers licenses.

Also, it is extremely unnuanced to think tv coverage just changes everything overnight... it doesn't.... putting paintball on tv will create a steady growth of both the sport and the audience... the two go hand in hand.

Fields will see an increase in business, from people that have watched the sport on tv and want to try it, and in turn, the audience will grown, and so on......

TV will not revolutionise the sport overnight - it will add to the already tremendous growth our sport is seeing (still the fastest growing sport on the planet).

For the players, it will mean a just as steady increase in their markedability and worth, and big bucks will not be lining their pockets overnight.... it will happen gradually.
