WORLD CUP news! Avalanche caught cheating!

As has been said elsewhere, there is just as much cheating at every level of the game - big games are full of cheating, as are Am-only tournaments.

But then we come to the issue of responsibility and accountability for Pros - if they are the sport's shop window to outside support and are constantly under the microscope, should they operate on a higher moral level than most? Should sponsors demand greater accountability from them?

Nice thought... but nah

Sponsors want to make money. They do that by getting publicity. They do that by getting their teams seen. They do that by having their teams win. At any cost, as long as they win. There may be some bad/negative publicity but in the long run it is good for the sponsors.

You think a bad rep for one guy making such a mistake will stick with Lanche for long? I don't.

Oh and in the mean time there are lots more pics of Jeremy around wearing warped hats and showing his sponsors stuff off... As said before I bet WDP are just gutted he wasn't using an Angel :)

how is that short term? short term is thinking this incident will be bad for 'Lanches sponsors.

WDP did that because they believe in the future of this sport and want to help it along. Nothing but respect for what those guys are doing in those terms. Not sure what that point has to do with the sponsorship thing though... especially considering how quiet WDP are about the fact they put the money into Pro.

You miss the point

>>>Sponsors want to make money. They do that by getting publicity. They do that by getting their teams seen. They do that by having their teams win. At any cost, as long as they win.<<<

That is short-termism if you follow the school of thought that pball won't go mainstream until we clean things up, because the amount of money the industry makes now is nothing compared to what it would make if pball went big-time.

And the WDP point is obvious: they put the money into PRO because they share the above strategy - they want things to explode and know that until we have a sport fit to present to the wider world, the big money isn't going to come knocking. Hence putting 50k into Pro rather than spending that money on a team/teams.

And what they do as a sponsor of Pro directly contradicts your opening premise, unless you take the long term view outlined above.

???

WDP is a sponsor that wants to make money. period.

By sponsoring pro they are helping the sport to grow and develop and will thus ultimately make a bigger pie they can have part of. Or they help it to grow to get in money from outside and they make money.

Sponsors want to make money. how is that short term? Surely that is the most important long term point there is? Surely that is why it will go mainstream.

WDP sponsor pro to make money, they sponsor teams with some people who are mostly regarded as being the biggest cheats. It doesn't matter to them as long as they will be making money.

Granted they are coming at it from many angles, but hey since when was it bad to have all bases covered?

I've never said I think paintball will won't go mainstream until we cleann it up. But I do think cleaning it up will help us to get main stream and more accepted sooner. I think there is a difference.

Putting money into Pro could have long term benefit in terms of market growth. We all know that paintballs biggest issue is judging, you only have to look to x-ball with a team like the russians trying to turn up and play fair.......mmmm the yanks MOWED them and everybody else into the ground, by playing the game hard and playing the rules hard.
High quality judging is the way to go because a wider audience will take the game more seriously if they see red hot judges ripping armbands off instead of players covered in shots cutting half a team down. Thats why WDP 'sank' money in to pro.
