Firstly well done to the Manc Union lads for providing loads of entertainment this season, taking away the £2,000 prize money and the series (whatever its called) title.
I know that some people take issue with the leagues title but to be honest I never knew what it was or cared. Its like arguing that the UK masters aren't the masters of paintball, the Simply the best winner isn't the best or the Heavens gate winner won't go to heaven.
What the PA has done is:
- provide a good standard of reffing
- quick turnarounds so you don't stand round for hours
- ramping, like it or loathe it it was a majority decision by players
- significant cash prizes for a domestic series
- TV coverage
- crowd involvement.
For me the biggest are the last two.
Like it or not when the event is shown on sky, even if its badly edited, the teams will be known by more none paintballers in the UK than the top 5 in the Millennium. Last time it was on, two of my local pubs had it on the big screen and I was a superstar for a couple of days
Compare it to PC games - is Tony Hawks currently the best in the world, I don't know but I think he is because the TV tells me.
Rightly or wrongly Manc Union, London Tigers and Birmingham Phoenix will be associated with the top flight of paintball in the eyes of the UK public that see them.
As for the crowd participation I've been a fan of it since i played the Am Open in Pittsburgh years ago. The X-ball last season only went further in confirming that for me and the last game of the PA league with Manc Union and the Tigers for the series title nailed it.
I don't agree with all the PA decisions. I don't agree with all its methods and I can understand how a lot of issues get out of hand because of the message delivery. I know some of the major players in this discussion have real issues with each other and I know some of the reasons why and can understand them.
That said it seems like the only issues some people have on here are that they couldn't get in the league or weren't good enough to compete in it so left. I don't think any team still in it has been on complaining about it!
I'm very fortunate in that I play virtually every weekend in many uk leagues as well as in the millennium. i enjoy them all and have some great friends in the sport and no axe to grind.
What I do know at the moment is that I've never been so pissed off at the fact that we can't enjoy the achievement of a great bunch of lads and a girl who have played some superb paintball and walked away with one of the major domestic series titles
well done all of you,
JJ
