Yep, sometimes it is inevitable that, through absent-mindedness, or misorganisation, whatever, that you're going to leave your marker alone.
All it takes is a couple of minutes while you're distracted for someone who's been watching you to get away with your Gat. I've read of elaborate schemes where motorbikes have been stolen in the case of a few minutes just by working a distraction on the rider, so "Look after your gear", while being a great watchword, isn't going to cut it.
The cable lock idea is great, as is the idea of a "Lost and found" style manned cabin where you can pay for a day's reserved storage place. No ticket, you don't get your marker back until everyone else has claimed theirs and it's still there! (Can tell I used to work a cloakroom, right?)
Also regarding the portability of a gear sack...all you need to do is obtain a tilt-alarm and put it in the sack with your gear, activate it when you're off to play and your bag is safe. These are easy to pick up (motorbike shops'll do 'em fairly cheap, about £40, though you can get 'em cheaper)....A bag screaming at 80db isn't going to be so convenient to carry away.
Alternatively, just use a Tippman, then no-one'll nick it
