Just posted this on another "stolen" thread, shows how common this sh*t is.

"This is getting more and more common.

Ive been to a few big (like over 1000 ppl) LAN tournaments with people walking around with their monitors and comps in their arms. Theft is kept to a minimum (although it will always go on) by two ways:

1. A sort of neighbourhood watch system, ie teams could keep and eye out for each other, although easier said than done

2. An I.D and badge system, a tag around the players neck and a sticker on the marker with both name and an ID number. This could be checked by a few people walking around to make sure they match obv.

Just some ideas, wont help for other equipment lost/stolen, and whether players will want to walk around with tags and stickers all over them and their "babies" is another matter.

Hope you guys find your stuff tho "

I like the sticker thing. Sure, it looks dumb, but hey...

But let's keep in mind that first and foremost we the players are responsible for security, and a very distant second comes the event promoter. In the same way that you are still responsible for locking your car, even if you park in a guarded car park.
To be honest, the way most players leave their hideously expensive gear just flapping about the place, is just screaming for some dodgy character to come in and sweep it up. Sure, he's a cnut for doing it, but it could have been prevented by a simple lock on your gear bag.

All that matters guys, is that our gear is safe.

We should be able to leave our expensive gear in a place that is in the area we are setup in, and safe from theiving hands.

There's no point tagging markers and gear, stop it at the source.

Let's have some lockers at each table, so we can lock up our kit bags. This way we are then responsible for our own equipment, it's as easy as that.

The benches could be made into boxes, with a lockable lid.

It doesn't have to be fancy or impregnable, just a wooden box with a lid we can lock down. Each box is connected to another so they can't be removed, job done.

I think this is a great idea - but who is going to pay for them? If every team built and brought their own, that would be great!

I think it would be hard for every promoter to build, transport and store the boxes after each event.

I'm sure some type of lock/chain system could be used to secure the boxes down instead of trying to connect the boxes to each other. . . .

My thoughts-

It costs nothing to be extra vigilant now that we're more aware of the problem. Teams watch each others kit. If you pack all your stuff away in a bag, then someone has to open it and go through it rather than just pick it up. If you see someone going through someone's bag, ask them what they're doing.

Or am I being too naive?

I think possibly a bit..:)

Too much kit is being nicked for this to be random, these thefts are organised. Until we remove the temptation, this will only increase.

For a site event, the boxes could be built over time, replacing the existing seating allready provided.

For events that are staged in fields, lockers can be rented, and the cost worked out with teams before the event.

We have to start taking this seriously, both from an organisers point of view, and from the players.

Look at the cost of replacing a marker, and the fact that you can't use it on that day, if it's gone.

It's time to do something about this..!!!!!!

sorry if this has been posted, i havent read it :D

but in my opinion i think there should be like a load of lockers in a building that can only be accesed by the owner, u go to the desk and tell them that u want it to be locked up, u pay something like £50 - £100 and they lock it up for u, they give you a card with a number on it which u keep until u want ur gear back, if u want it to be locked up again u can ask afterwards and it is done for free, so its a one time charge to get it secure.

or something along those lines, maybe ive been hitting my head to hard :p but seriously, i also believe that stolen markers is an issue that's getting out of hand :(

all your plans are good ones but will not work for these 2 reasons.

1. you say you will pay for these lockers to be built - what about everyone else? damn straight they won't...
2. whose gonna transport these lockers around the place? the organiser? why should he? specially as running tournaments is a part time thing for him...

To be honest, if you leave your gun lying about with no-one watching it then you deserve to have it taken...Most if not all teams have an extra body with them. All you need to do is always have one person with the kit...
