Pete has a good vision of how to improve things and make the most of a bad situation. However, as a solution to competing with the US teams? No. It could only work if the US teams stand still for several years while we catch up. Pete's vision for growth is good, don't get me wrong, but the US scene is growing at a much much faster rate than we would be, even after change, and change in itself takes time. By the time we get to the standard that the US teams are getting to now, Olly Lang will be on Jay Leno talking about his Nike sponsorship, and they'll still be ahead by leaps.
It's unrealistic to suggest that rec site owners need to step up investment in walk-ons, if you do the maths, the increase in revenue of doing this is miniscule. From a business perspective the money would be better spent maintaining/improving the site to become a top class rec-site and attract even more punters willing to pay huge mark-ups. The only exception I would say is where sites are operating at near max capacity and theres no more to make off punters.....Wdp's site for example is easily the best in the uk and there is work being done on a walk-on area. To expect wide-scale change when site owners can spend money in a way that will bring greater returns however, just aint gonna happen. Instead, the idea of teams setting up their own walk-on places, buying fields, I think is the best hope. Dave Stewart has done it in south London- made an agreement with land owners, bought/made agreements for fields...problem solved....coverage? Whats that about ego's/pettiness
again?
Sorting out the european tournament scene is bang on, whatever the Millennium are doing, they're pissing off the players and the hand that feeds them at the moment...the change needs to start there for sure..
