The simular could be said to a lot of americans, 'why do you shoot paintball guns when you can go out and shoot some military hard ware you bought from Wal-mart?'
Different horses, different courses.
In a game context it's actually a valid point almost and one that would be very key if i was a publisher looking at funding a paintball (video) game. Why on earth would people want to play a game like this?
What any prospective game maker (i feel) needs to do is play to the sports strengths to get the public (and publishers) intrested. If companies try and tackle the game from a purely 'action' perspective, where you are simply a paintballer, running around a field, using a first person view to shoot at others ...then i think they will be doomed. Paintball's strength (as a sport) is in its strategy and its teamplay as well as the obvious adrenalin fueled excitment of a format like XBall. I think, to make the game stand out it will need to combine these factors, that way it can really impress the public...Because otherwise it would probably be regarded as some '3rd rate first person shooter where you don't kill anyone'
It's almost a totaly blank slate (excluding Lemmings Paintball, Digitial Paint for Half-Life & other rubbish) and hopefuly the development teams responsible will take a step back to realise they have a fantastic oportunity to be the first to define what a paintball video game is. Please guys, don't blow it beacuse if you do It won't give many other companies the confidence in financing another venture involving the sport.
