TL, you're exclusively going by the British rec. scene, the American version is COMPLETELY different. You guys hear about all of our different tourney leagues and what-not, but the rec. scene dwarfs it in comparison. The rec. scene is every bit as serious as the tourney here, just look at the pics from any big-game, you'll see plenty of guys shooting Angels, 'Cockers, Shockers, all sorts of high-end guns, with camo tape wrapped all over 'em. You don't run into a lot of camo tape in a tourney situation. It's serious, and it's huge over here, so I suppose my point is, blame the Americans.;)

Hmmmm!

Okay I have no concept of what is going on in the states as i live In the good old UK.
It just goes to show how different the two Nations views are on paintballing. Over here the majority of the people who play in the woods are corperate days out or stag do's. The site owners offer no encouragement for players to own their own markers and walk ons are near enough none existant. After all you bring your own paint and you are taking food out of the site owners kiddies mouths:rolleyes:
In twelve years of playing recball over here I have seen someone other then my mates turn up with their own marker maybe twice at the most.
I stand corrected maybee JoeSchmoe does belong in the mag but I personally still feel it is still a waste of a tree.

That's the thing, paintball in England is no where near the level it has reached in the states - the first time I played in America, almost a year ago now, the only rental player out of a about 30-40 players that randomly turned up was my neighbour and about 4 others! There were people with your standard Tipmanns as you would expect - but I saw this guy with a tricked out Black Magic, totally into rec. ball too!

About the site owners offering no ecouragement to walk on in England - I couldn't agree more with you! The attitude towards walk ons is horrendous over here (the majority of the time). There has only ever been about 2 people with their own equipment at the site where I marshall in the past 10 months! It's because you just don't make the money that way! Even if the odd person brings their own kit, they most certainly gotta go with FPO - and even then ure getting charged about £100 a box over here (that's about $150).
I'm sure part of it is the market in England, maybe part of it is also the 'tight brit' mentality also, I'm not sure. But the point is - the rec ball scene is miniscule over here in comparison to the states in terms of regular players.

Tying in with PGI - to get a hold of a copy in England, you have to either have a subscription or order it specially from you're newsagents/bookstore. I've never seen a copy on the shelf. I go to the states however, and they have 6 copies in the periodical section of most bookstores and even the occasional newsagent I go to. The contrast is huge - then you go to The Sports Authority in the states where you'll find people like Greg getting their first Spyder/Tippmann to begin with - proceeding up to cockers, they'll see PGI on the shelf and flick through it cos it is 'paintball'. When the however many thousands of yanks flick through it and see Joe Schmoe they'll think " cool, that's just like what I did last weekend' or 'Oh yeah, I can totally relate to a story like that" or "Awesome, they cover rec ballers in here too".

There are so many of them over there, you can't just cut them off - it would be like throwing a huge potential number of readers out of the window, now why would PGI want to do that?

Turn the page or rip it out and nail it to the back of your chrono booth if it reaaaaally gets under you're skin that much TL  (That's what we did at my site with the full length 'Mission:paintball' bloke, he he he he :D )

Keep Joe Schmoe.

It's a bit of a larf and gives us a break from all that serious tourney stuff.

How many of you would just like to take some of your mates into the woods and have fun shooting each other?
It is fun and a lot of us started like that.

Said my bit
bye

I know of only 2 sites that offer walk on days ( but thats only cos I havn't looked) OTE near Congleton and Marchbrook both are superb value AND both operators still make enough to keep doing it.... As for PGI being on the shelf I have seen it regularly in Borders at the Ellesmere Port outlet village (but never anywhere else) I spoke to the manager of a site called rapidfire paintball up in Aviemore and asked about walk ons and he said he had never considered it cos no one had mentioned it but he would give reduced rates to own gunnies. Speak to site owners and Ask 'em
Sparklie wadaya say? walk on time darn sarf?:D
as for Joe Schmoe I stopped reading it ages ago and I was at the NvS and no-one mentioned PGI to me all day.......nice to hear some-one other than a Yank is in it for once ;) you've broken the duck guys who's next? Dutch? Russian? or something far worse Aussie:D :D
If Paintball is truely the world wide sport it seams to be we should be hearing about 'em as well as the yanks
