Carrying on with the 'staging it' idea, making sure all players throughout the day realise this is a promo for the sport, not a serious tourney would maybe encourage some risky (and to spectators - exciting) moves? so then there should be a bit more action all day, and most public will get to see it, rather than just the few who see the 'staged' game??

Just an idea!
Problem is your still putting prices and the lure for competition, people will still fight even for pride. Competition isn't a problem either makes for more heated performances by teams.

The field layout will be what will show off peoples skills, if they have any.

Something the commentators will need to mention is play styles, similar to american football you have plays in paintball. Even though it maybe too complex for the average Joe to understand it still needs noting.

As long as you have the crowd understanding the basic principal, Team A has to push the button / score the flag in Team B's end and if they score 4 goals they win! And also getting the crowd to participate in terms of cheering for teams or players would indeed make it brilliant none the less.

Needed;

Observant/Whitty/Knowledgeable/Clear commentators,
Correct field layout,
Banners to show who's playing,
Player Names Clearly on their shirt,
Eye candy,
Information Points/ Leaflet handing out,
Something for the crowd to keep to remind them of the day.

I'm sure there a multiple other things. I like the theme tune idea.

Just an idea for inbetween matches and that....

How about setting up two bunkers right in front of the crowd and have a few players going through some snap shooting... this could also be extended to 'one v ones' and some jousting

Here's a pretty good example :p...

http://www.p8ntballer-forums.com/vb/dvd

This will focus the crowds attention on the two players... that's where all the action is and so the crowd are less likely to miss that 'great moment'. They will also be able to watch the two players trying to outwit each other at close quarters and see that there is actually more than paintballing than how quickly you can pull the trigger.

... or you could have a 'snake player' competition... with a twist. You have a player at either end of the field, buzzer goes off, they both steam over to the snake which is right in front of the crowd, one's running and gunning in whilst the other is looking to superman into it... you then have a one v one gun fight. The twist is... there is a flag in the middle of the snake which the players must capture to win the match. This means both snake players will have to make moves around the knuckles to get close enough to pick the flag up.

Crazy ideas... maybe... probably lol? but I think that something like this will concentrate the crowds attention to where all the action is likely to take place and increase the chances them capturing that 'awesome' move. Also, this would remove any of the competitive aspects seen in xball and hopefully see players taking more risks and pulling off the bigger moves which they may not try during a point.

Just a thought...

how can you tell if a player is ugly behind the mask?

how about a "public" zone so tent with all the info on the sport, rules etc maybe some kit on a table manned by a couple of players?

Xbox or something in one corner so kids can play millenium/greg hastings.

Replace paintballs with real bullets, nothing draws a crowd like dead bodies. Or an all out knife fight, outside KFC.

Seriously, if you want paintball to work as a spectator sport you need to ramp up the bloodlust. Staged games ala American wrestling might work, but only with uncapped, hopper limited full auto, shoot the cheating fcuker till he falls over or crys for his mummy. Bring the pain train, choo choo!!!
