Enforcing the rules and unsportsmanlike conduct

So are you saying...

frankly, I'd much rahter have a ref who has had good training on how to be a ref than a ref who was a good player. They're too different animals.

The main reason I would think ex-players would make better reffs is the ability to recognize the potential actions before they occur, as in muggings, swan dives into bunkers to obscure hits
and the willingness to get into the zones where they happen.
Someone who dosen't play speedball or worse yet has never played at all, dosen't strike me as the person who is going to run into the line of fire to check you.

I, and many others, used transparent shields at the World Cup. Sometimes they were a little clumsy but they allowed us to get right into the middle without having to pay the price.

At Joy Masters I don't exaggerate when I say that I came home looking like a dalmation. One slightly screwed up situation came from a neutral call I felt necessary to call because I needed to get a closer look to determine if paint was bunker smear or not, because when I got close I got literally pounded.

Cheating

Cheating takes place in all sports.

1...Physical threats Dont.(including Deliberate shooting)

2....Argueing with officials Dosn't

So lets make these 2 offences the first to be tackled

1...A ban from the event in question and if it occurs again ban them from the series . But as one Organiser generally dosn't ring his competion up and warn them what teams Players are cheating this might be hard.

2...1-4-1 and one strike of the players card (get 3 and your Out of the Event)

A card tagged to the players goggles could be punched with a hole like at the original Hyperball...No card No play and as its got hte players name and picture on it No problem

Interesting thread....

I'm slightly curious as to how this will tie in with the reffing at X-Ball events, and the effeect (if any) that it will have on the rest of the paintball scene.

Let's assume for a moment that X-Ball is going to be the first major televised paintball series, with the 8 home teams, big sponsorship deals, pay for the players maybe, yadda yadda yadda...

How are people like La Soya, basing on his interview, going to survive continual cheating that gets caught on camera? Match bans? Series bans? Fines?? Kicked out of the team?? By playing clean??

In my humble opinion, the reffing issues within X-Ball could be THE major thing that influences the rest of us non X-ball players.

Just think... the example set by all X-Ball teams playing clean !?!?!?!

Good point. If X-ball does get the media attention that a lot of people think it will, then things like cheating will be made a whole lot more blatantly obvious. And unless it is dealt with in a professional way, then it could be a major obstacle for the sport. So hopefully it will produce some quality solutions.

Do you play? Have you played? Yes, Out here in the butt end of nowhere we have seen and some even use these strange devices. Personally I have never used one for the simple reason that I would be dividing my attention between what I should be watching and trying to keep the shield in front of incoming paint,;)

Ref shields rock.

They're not just good for keeping paint off you, they're good for keeping paint off players. Someone is coming in on a bunker run, soon as someone gets hit you can throw the shield between the players. Also nice when you have to pull a player out from a bunker to check them, you can use the shield to extend the bunker and give yourself some room.

I have been playing for over ten years now and I played 5-player in that same World Cup. We came in fourth place.

Many of us, including some of GZs top players, used shields that year. I and others would, for example, squat very low right in the middle of the Hyperball field. I caught many who were hit on the break very handily that way and was able to take them out instantly.

And, "amen" to the post that came just after yours.

I think some players think that clear, transparent shields are just not "cool". We're supposed to be masochists, I guess.

I think I can say that I am about as unafraid of getting hit as any player out there. I don't hesitate to put myself in the shizit when I play. It doesn't hurt as much when the adrenaline is flowing, until afterwards.

I think I illustrated what I tolerated to do the good job we did at Joy Masters. I just think shields can reduce the punishment and as the next post after yours said, help us do a better job.
