I'm pretty sure it's a lisencing agreement on the technology, because if they did own the IP outright then why would Gen-E still have anything to do with the matrix?

I am 100% certain DYE now own the IP. I know this from talking to Paul Sattler, and a friend of mine who now works for DYE. I also know what DYE paid for it, and if they were just paying for a licence then they got screwed!
DYE now owns the matrix.
It's also known because they have used that as a bargaining point with SP to avoid getting sued. Apparently it's a case of Dye saying don't sue us for using electronics and in return we won't sue you for infringing the Matrix patent with the new shocker...
Paul Sattler told me they would just retain the rights to sell the gun and custom versions of it. DYE got the rights to make it, develop it and sell it. I think Gen E are getting them at cost, or near to it and then just selling them on.

I was not aware of that. From all the press releases i was lead to believe that they had simply lisenced it.

Why not? I believe Paul is over the moon and laughing all the way to the bank. He was very happy about it when I talked to him.
He got a huge chunk of money for the Matrix, doesn't have to worry about being sued by Smart Parts, no longer has to deal with production worries, and just gets to sell all the latest and greatest Matrix stuff that DYE cook up...
I'm thinking Paul Sattler/Gen E are very, VERY happy right now...
SP is a privately owned company with four people involved and IIRC three share holders.
Adam owns 45%, Billy Jnr owns 45%, Billy Snr owns 10% and the mother is secretary. (or the Ma and Pa may share their 10%).
