The NXL & ESPN

So much depends on tha ESPN thang - if it gets good figures and tha network likes it then tha teams that stuck with the NXL are gonna have that decision validated.

I don't think pball, irrespective of format, is ever gonna work on TV anyway - but I been banging that drum for years. Let's hope I'm wrong.

Very simple Sam. The officials made a point--at least to us--that everything on the field would be strictest interpretation of the rules. We had one player prior to the start having to change a number of things, including his goggles, in order to comply.
That was also in the game Oakland won going away as we had, among other things, 3 5-minute penalties called on us.

If you want to believe the "fix" was in try this on for size. In game 1 versus Oakland Strange had one point taken off the board after Bob came out and started arguing with the officials. He not only got a point removed after it had been posted he got the refs to call a penalty on us that carried over to the next point. And at the very end of regulation we blew Oakland off the field, grabbed the flag and dashed to their start as time ran down. The Strange player dove, the horn sounded--from our vantage point it looked like he made it but the ref judged he was 4 to 6 inches away in mid-slide as the horn began sounding.

Everyone "sees" things in some measure according to their predisposition. I'm sure the refs think they did a bang up, unbiased job and at the same time I expect every team thinks the officials or someone else involved was harder on them than on anyone else. It's paintball, especially when everyone is fighting to win.

Bea is very cool in person...I've mentioned this before, but she has hypnotic eyes...very difficult to take your own eyes off of hers during conversation.

Outta the kindness of my heart kids a brief review of WC. Layout was similar to last year except 10-man fields were set-up where Xball had been and vice versa. If nothing else it sent the message Xball is the PSP's future. The biggest vendors showed up with so much stuff there was no room in the same space as last year to accomodate the smaller vendors who were moved to a row facing 4 of the Xball fields. Some of those vendors apparently weren't overly pleased and thought their traffic suffered for it.
As one of those vendors, I can say that we were not pleased. I visited the "Rich Neighborhood", as it was dubbed, several times and can tell you that the vendors that were placed in the "Ghetto", as it was dubbed, could have easily fit over by the other vendors. There were plenty of empty spaces there throughout the entire week.

Secondly, the vendors in the "Ghetto" only saw people a few days out of the entire week because the fields were only used two or three out of the nine days. The people at the very end saw very little traffic because the ICD field was barely used.

Was this because those in the "Rich" neighborhood paid a lot of money to be there?

I heard from several vendors, including some rather large vendors, that they no longer plan to support the PSP.

I heard fewer complaints about reffing generally but the majority were about the arbitrary rulings concerning legal vs. illegal gun operation. The whole situation is simply getting worse and worse.
It doesn't have to do with the guns (although, cheater boards are a factor). It had to do with the poor, if any, training they gave the refs. The refs were making calls they shouldn't have even made at all. A lot of teams lost points (88 that I know of) because of bad ref calls, calls that - later in the week - were admitted shouldn't have been made. But, those teams had already lost, so what can you do after the fact?

On an added note I can say that after this years World Cup event, we will no longer be supporting or covering PSP events.

Obviously I am biased... :D

But I was completely in line with that, if your guy hadn't dived he would have made it. The fact he went for a fancy finish meant he came up short. He hadn't touched the net when the horn sounded. There was a ref right there too. Fair enough Strange won it on the next point. They played very well.

As for legal guns, Beaker.... there is only one team in Pro X-ball I can put my hand on my heart and say I know are using 'legal' guns. The rest... :(

EDIT: And just to make it clear. The team I know to be using legal boards is the Russian Legion.

1--while the broad issue is a significant one all I meant was I don't think there's anything to be gained by arguing over which players or teams may have done this, that or the other thing. It's easy to lose sight of the big picture arguing minutiae.
2--charter member of the fan club, eh, Furbs? :)

2: Bea is a very nice lady, a very good player, and she's certainly an attractive lady. However, aside from my wife, Rosie Garcia is the only woman I'd ever consider joining a fan club for.

1. I wouldn't consider 80 teams having issues with 'illegal' markers minutiae, but as I've noted elsewhere the 5 man competition is a redheaded stepchild and has been for some time. The modes in use for the NXL competition were legal by their standards, and that's good enough for me. I won't speak on the issues facing divisional X Ball, simply because I didn't get a chance to observe anything with regards to those games.

1. Bea is very cool. Good coach too. :)

2. It's not that their were teams using "cheater boards", which I'm sure there were, but it's the fact that the refs were making calls they shouldnt have made in the first place affecting the outcome for a LOT of teams.
