And I can see all the Euros bailing too, which will free up a couple of spots.

Between the bailing Euros (and the team owners who suddenly realise their team isn't worth the $500k that 6 months ago they thought it'd be worth by now, and who decide to sell up), there should be just enough space to squeeze all the NXL teams into the Pro league.

So, back to the good old days, Yanks play NPPL, Euros play over here, but where shall the twain meet?

Well, there may be an answer to that...hopefully.

Actually - I think that will be a good thing for European paintball!

It will mean that paintball companies will have to invest more in European teams, to get their products promoted at the European majors, because their US sponsored teams are no longer promoting for them in the rapidly growing European market.

It will mean that European teams get more prize money as there are no US teams in the mix.

It will mean more media coverage for European teams.

It will mean the European tournament scene can start focussing on developing on its own terms.

YES - the competition in the highest division will suffer a bit - and at some point teams need to start making the crossover to US events again.... but in the meantime, I believe European paintball is better off without the US teams playing MS events alltogether.

Had the alternative been a global league, where European teams had sufficient budget to compete on even terms, it would be absolutely best... but as long as that is not the case, we're better off without the US teams playing European events IMHO.

It's logical - and selfperpetuating Duff :)

As soon as ONE company is seen to invest more heavily in the Euro market, others will have to follow suit (well not HAVE to - but they will ;))

- And - sponsors like "winners" better than "14th Pro team in the MS".

Wait and see :)

Maybe Nick, but allow me to suggest that...

1. Very few teams/individuals on the world stage actually influence purchasing decisions.

2. The huge growth of information outlets and the increasingly savvy nature of consumers means that very, very few people actually believe that sponsored athletes believe in the products they use. And Paintball is absolutely atrocious when it comes to chanigng sponsors at the drop of a hat. Until Paintballers actually start developing long term relationships with companies ( a la Beckham with adidas) then no-one will believe players as endorsees.

3. Following on from this, the extreme sports marketing model does not work in Paintball. I.E. Say I'm Oakley, for argument's sake...sponsoring top downhill mountain biker Steve Peat will give me a bigger amount of exposure for far less money than backing a Paintball team. (Ostensibly you're talking the same demographic). Backing an individual player in Paintball, however, is hard for various reasons. Teams are simply too expensive.

3. The industry is hurting big time and there is precious little money about. Recent industry movements are going to make this worse, not better, in the short to mid term.

4. The industry may well start to rethink and refocus its products and its spend, and we could see money that has gone into teams being pumped into different areas.

5. Tournament Paintball is eating itself alive.

The European market may well get more investment Nick, but that doesn't mean the teams will.

Just a few cheery ideas...

I have to say that I am in general agreement with Duff on this one

Paintball as an enitity has always tried to break the 100m world record before it is capable of walking.

The Euro NPPS/NPPL cross over a few years ago for instance.

PSP/X Ball/NPPL/MS now

A clear direction, one format, two major leagues - one in Europe and one in the States is the way forward.

Clarity of thought and concentration of sponsorship/investment moneys.

Develope this over a number of years with consistent teams as entities that do not come and go as their driving force retires or moves into new business opportunities.

Then in ten years time, with a record of stability behind us can the true sport emerge.

Even if the MS and NPPL split, and there is no NPPL-Europe, and the Euro pro's all back out of the NPPL, you'll still see the US' heavy hitters making the trip over to the MS.

I don't see what would change on your end. Sponsors would still have the option of using XSV and Dynasty and Avalanche to promote their products in Europe. Teams would still have to deal with those US teams crossing over, and therefore would still be "the 14th pro team in the MS".
