What do NPPL refs currently get paid / given to ref?
Actually, it depends on experience level. It runs from $85 to $125 per day, ranging from level 1 (rookie) up to field head ref. Plus $25/day for food.

Edit - the $35 refered to a "recertification" fee the league charged all returning refs.

Wow. That sucks. You'd get more working at McDonalds.

8 refs x 6 fields x 3 days x $130 = $18720.

That is a phenomonally piss-poor amount of money to spend on reffing for a national-level tournament. That's not even 9 team entry fees, out of 200!

When you're spending less than 5% of your revenue - no, wait, make that less than 3% of your revenue when you factor in vendors and ID cards and grandstand tickets - it's no wonder your quality of officials sucks.

Who decides how much NPPL referees are paid?

I don't think this is just a case of negligence or incompetence. This looks like a pretty clear-cut decision to focus on TV prospects at the expense of running quality events. And if TV does work out for NPPL, I don't see how that's going to help any of the D3, D2, etc teams that financed it by paying big dollars for crappy events.

I just don't see how anybody can possibly be so stupid as to think they can spend a mere $18,720 per event on reffing and get anything less than a crappy result. It has to be a willful decision, and to "make an announcement" about how there are going to be "significant changes" is no more than saying "Ooops, guess you guys won't take as much **** as we thought."

Nick, no offence, as I think you have been making a lot more sense lately, but your statement 'reffing is easy to fix' is very naive. I was involved in the Pro Reffing program back before the split, and I can assure you that all the money in the world can't buy talent and dedication. Sourcing the right people and having someone with the strength of character to lead and train those refs while building pride in the job is tough, and there are few that could do it. Ron is certainly one who could.
It was WDP that pioneered the Pro reffing organisation because the reffing was not up to par with the standard of play. I think this level of involvement is what is needed again, but unfortunately there are people in the game that would seriously object to WDP being instrumental in overhauling the reffing program. This is short-sighted of course, but thats no suprise....

thank fu*k for that...funnily enough though that still equates to how much you would get paid at a local tournament over here. hmmm...

it sucks because it isn't true.

The reffing varies from $150 to $250 a day and the ultimates get much more than that. There are also allowances for food, drink, and travel, plus obviously accomodation. The overall cost of reffing the events is substantial.

Chicago, check your facts before you talk kid, or you make yourself look an idiot. Better to comment on things you know something about.....

I just looked at the figures. Shamu's seem to be off too. I also checked them with Camille. Chicago added no depth whatsoever, as he did not take food, drink, accomodation or transportation into account. If someone wants to run numbers, then they need to do so accurately, or its bollox.

I accepted Shamu's numbers ($85->$125 + $25 food allowance) and multiplied. I didn't do this entirely blindly, as I've been told by several people that NPPL refs get paid as little as $75 and as much as $125 depending on the person. I've never heard from any person that they were paid anywhere close to $250. If $250 includes a "travel allowance", that's definitely an inflated number as NPPL seems to be bending over backwards to hire as many local referees as possible, regardless of how bad they are.

If you think NPPL refs are paid $150-$250, I would go talk to NPPL refs and ask them how much they are paid as I suspect there's some money disappearing in there somewhere.

Also, why would you ask Camille how much NPPL refs are paid?

NPPL has this nice announcement on it's website about how there are going to be changes in the PRO organization...

How can you change something that doesn't exist?
