It could work if it was there were only pump gun tourneys. Obviously it wouldn't work now for low end tourneys, but if there was TV coverage of pro teams, then I think that there would be as much interest in a pump tourney as there would in a semi tourney, and the paint is given to them for free, so the companies would make more money! :D

Or is that just naive?

first off I want to clearly state that I respect the opinions of those who choose to live in the past(pump users). I think that pump play takes away from what we want the future of paintball to become, television friendly. Nobody wants to watch a bunch of guys run around the woods in real tree shooting at eachother with pumps. It's like playing basketball with a peach-basket and a soccer ball like they did back in the "beginning" of the sport. I think it would be more beneficial to the future of paintball if people were introduced to it the way that it's played at its highest level. Not necessarily giving kids strange-visions for their first time out, but some kind of semi and a decent concept field to play on. All matters of personal opinion of course, but I think bringing the sport noteable recognition as such in the mainstream should be the focus. Then again, I'm sure there's still people playing basketball with soccer balls and peach baskets:) , so maybe I'm wrong.

i agree, i went for 2yrs thinking mucking about woods + camo were all paintball was until i went to Crystal Palace last summer. i live just down the road from the stadium and the problem is there is no advertising for it outside serious paintball circles eg these forums, PGI etc... the local paintball sites need to advertise the sport in its true form to the punters but unfortunatly they're keepin pretty hush hush even though the Millenium Series at Palace is comin round again in just a coupla months i think. If sites advertise more a greater number of spectators and potential new comers to the game will get a better grasp of how its really played and it can only be good for the sport.

This time last year i thort PB was a "war game" just a day out with mates, now i realise the sport, the depth of it and even though i can probably never play again i love it more than ever i hope more ppl turn this way after the summer.

Here's a concept - people use pumps 'cause they're fun. And no, you don't have to dress in a ghillie suit and fire 1 ball per match to have fun with a pump. You can even use them on a sup air field. Now I've never seen a sup- air pump match but I remember the speedball ones with pumps and there was none of this "game on" and then 4 minutes of balls drumming off barricades and nothing happening. Funnily enough there was running about and bunkering, made all the more chancy with the inaccuracies of slam fire - you're saying this isn't "television friendly"?

Ahem.

You can play all pumps anywhere, including airball fields. And, in fact, Skyball 2000 tried a pump division. I say tried becasue Skyball 2K was a scheduling nightmare from the word go, it's amazing that ANYONE got to play at all. (Any tournament where they announce over the PA "If you have all your score sheets, and you can prove you got more than 500 points, please come to the scoring table to advance into the finals" you know it's a disaster...)

Point is that you can take the technology anywhere. Pumps slow the ROF down enough that players can move with some impunity, meaning they move more. Cameras love to watch people in motion. What's the MOST spectacular moves in paintball? It's not longballing, let me tell you. Bunkering. The Break. The Endgame. All movement, bodies in motion. Slow down the ROF, you get movement.

I've played all pumps on hyperball fields, it's NOT a game for the old guys, let me tell ya. I was winded in the first few minutes of running...

Overall point : Jones nailed it already. But, don't slam anyting untill you've seen it, or tried it. I've done both, it can work if given half the chance. Don't stereotype what you don't see.

Pump = Woods

Why's that?

I have played speedball with pump. The difference is that people can't shoot 20 BPS and it's harder to run and be accurate with a pump than a semi. It's just as fun to watch if not even more, it tends to be more movement of people and not only of balls in a pump speedball match.

A all pump speedball match can be over in the break just as an electro game, I have witnessed it happen more than once. You can come up with 6-7 BPS with a pump and you still only need to hit a guy with one ball to get him out.

Take your electro marker and shoot 6 bps, do you really think it's that little? Now imagine how much more skill and training it takes for a guy who want's to shoot 6 bps and be accurate with a pump compared to the guy who does the same thing with an electro.

I just can't belive that electro markers is the future of competition paintball, the new Angel Speed talks about 30 BPS. Why not allow full auto then, think how happie the industry would be! Come on it's the future, you can't stop developement you backward pump players!
Is it really so? Take a peak at Formula 1, Americas Cup sailing, Golf or other sports where the outcome of your results depend quite a bit on the equipment you use. The Formula 1 car have major restrictions and while technology advances new restrictions are beeing introduced every year. Same thing with the ships in americas cup and the golf clubs (size of the head of on drivers, lenght on all clubs exept putters and so on).

I can't help notice one quite interesting thing with the discussion boards on the paintball sites today compared to those some years ago.

Today you'll find that the discussions about the markers always beats the discussion about tactics, playing and gaming. I remember reading an article over a couple of pages in a all pump magazine about physical training. How to work out and eat right to improve as a player. Ok, a frontplayer in a proteam must be fit no no doubt about that, but we seam to much rather talk about wich marker is best this or that instead of; 'How do I become a better player?'

Agree,

thanks for a short and great post Jones. I just seem to create trolls and that make people to jump to the conclusion that it must have something to do with old things in the woods..
