2) first off if its on tv people will see it, then make their minds up weather they like it or not. They might even try it.... bringing more paintballers into the fold,
3) If corporate sponsors dont work out who cares aslong as the steady increase of people joining the sport is maintained then the sport will start to thrive and it will go from there.
Actualy, first, thanks for keeping it civil.
It's more than I expect lately from most people. But, to points :
1 ) I go off the history of the sport on TV. The '95 series was aired in drive time, good time for the show. The following '96 Invitational was aired mostly at 2 AM, which is where they put the REALLY bad stuff. I know that a PREVIOUS incarnation if the APL's show was aired around 6 AM on local affiliate sports networks. I haven't seen the FSN shows, and those are hard to find. OLN ran Shatnerball 2 times, that's all.
ESPN has even published that they will never run paintball as a part of the X-games. And any news on the Gravity games? As far as I've seen, paintball is payng these networks to air paintball. I have yet to see anyone running to paintball to put it up there. I hear you already, "What about Dick Clark?" Well, what about DCP? Heard anything lately? (Serious question)
2 ) This is legitimate, to a point. Please understand this is a US perspective here, plust I play mosty rec ball. I go into Galyans, K-Mart, Walmart, Dicks, Sports Authority, BASS outdoor store, and SEVERAL other mainstream retailers and I see paintball gear. Not just Talons, but I see Spyders, Tippmans, blisterpack FULL starter kits with goggles, tank, plug, hopper, elbow and gun. I see the growth already. Five years ago I thought it was trippy to buy paintball goggles at K-mart. Now I can go to Galyans and get $2 pods and some decent paint if I need. We really haven't needed TV to get us to this point. Oh sure, there's a buzz on TV, but we don't have weekly matches on the 'box. Finally the industry is geared up to handle the influx of players, but they're coming with or without TV.
I don't know what the "scene" is like in the UK, but from the one expirence I had there I'm guessing that there's at least a slighlty healthy rec-scene there. In a pouring rain I got to play with roughly 50-60 people, mostly newbies, at Wargame in St. Albans. That tells me they're out there playing. And that rocks, BTW. So it's my expirence that they're playing.
3 ) Televised sports thrive on corporate sponsors. Granted things like the "Super Bowl" or the "World Series" are different, but they make good examples. The network pays NFL or MLB to air these events. They turn around to corporations and sell advertizing everywhere they can. If the corporations don't buy commercial time, the network can't afford the event. If that happens, they don't air it.
The last big deal I've heard for paintball was a few loquor sponsors for paintball. Hey, that's cool too. But I don't see a team called "Cuervo Nation" yet. I don't see these sponsors really demanding TV coverage as a part of thier deal to sponsor an event.
So overall point still stands. People are playing, the growth is still there without TV coverage weekly, the events are getting larger... Why do we need to thrust paintball onto a TV market that is minimally interested in us? I'm beginning to think it's all about ego, people wanting to see themselves on TV.
That's the best answer I've got so far, anyway.
