i dont want to sound like im really negative (or just plain daft) but....

i really cant see any paintball (xball or other) being on normal tv in the next year or two, just think especially in america/uk, we are still having so much trouble in Iraq etc that people are gonna think we are glorifying guns (yes - before you all start im not trying to draw comparisons with paintball and real guns, but we all know the general public will come to that conclusion), so who is gonna risk their reputation to promote us on tv?

yes this sucks for those who have to wait, but if you look at the big picture you'll agree.

I was wondering what happened to all the hunting shows. It was the war in Iraq. Have they cancelled the Olympic biathlon competition, too? Come to think of it I haven't seen a war movie in ages either. Wow! That's spooky. :)

Also MrDan, whilst I find that point interesting and somewhat plausible would 'they' not also be a little more concered about the proliferation of on-line games with 'Iraq' style mods (Counter Strike, Call of Duty etc) and full on 'kill the ragheads' style bravado??? Surely that would be higher up the list of concern?

Found this intresting quote from Rick Hartman (one of the main men at Paintball Wholesalers, makers of the Nasty guns) on IOG forum regarding The Nerve that is gonna be out in the next couple of weeks. Doesn't sound very limited to 15bps....

The Nerve
I went to SP on Friday and shot the new nerve. It is the fastest gun out of the box for sure no questions about it. The reason for the delay has been the feed neck they wanted something better then anyone elses and they came up with it. the gun has four modes of firing. It is almost like the old turbos on shockers but better. The first mode is semi only. The second mode is the turbo kicks in around 11 bBS. The Third mode kicks in at 9 BPS and the fourth mode kicks in at 7 BPS. Now I shot the gun At the 7BPS and I used one finger by the second trigger pull I was shooting more then 20 BPS. It was sick. You may say why would you want something like this. Well I have a shocker that has some crazy stuff done to it and it shots about 27 BPS and it is the most fun and Enjoyable marker I have ever shot. And no you can not get a regular shocker to shoot that fast so don't ask how. SP is trying to make the Nerve be problem free for their customers. If they do have any problems (which I know of none) SP stands behind their product and will fix it.

I hope this helped

Broz--the 15 bps ceiling F/A is rumored to be the new standard for the NXL. Nothing to do with anything else--at the mo. (And when I say, rumored, I mean unconfirmed publically.)

It is interesting to see SP promoting the Nerve as the market's first openly ramping high end gun tho.

Look for NXL's F/A guns at NorthEast Open.

Oh i'm fully aware that the 15bps limit (much like the allowance of of FA) is only a rumour....my point was that a company that is a MAJOR stakeholder in the NXL is releasing a new marker that seems to fit the FA requirement out of the box.

If that's not confirmation, I don't know what is.

How do you know this?
No one knows, but I believe it has a lot of potential, particularly for new-to-the-sport type viewers.

What therefore are you basing your statements on?
1. Xball matches run for a specified time, rather than 45 seconds to 7 minutes. That makes it a bit easier to deal with for scheduling, it seems to me.

2. The longer time that games run gives audiences time to pick favorites. A 3 minute game doesn't build loyalty as easily. The viewer who watches a lot of those short bursts might become partisan, but Xball has a lot of short bursts built in.

3. Riskier play is rewarded more in Xball than 7 man. That is more fun to watch (riskier play).

4. The downtime between points is an automatic gap that provides a place for slo-mo replays, commentary, alternate camera angels, player profiles, all kinds of supplimentary information that could draw people in quickly, help form attachment, and elucidate the multi focus action.

5. Crowds yelling bring paintball spectators closer to the 'basketball-watching' end of the sport viewing end of the spectrum, farther from the 'golf-watching' end of the spectrum. The noise and excitment are so much more, though some events have had good, rowdy crowds (in the NPPL- getting booed when a ref cleaned me up was one of the high points of Miami).
The announcers at the NPPL events are always trying to wring some life from the crowd, which sits in silence and watches each game. I am refering here, to the prelims- I know the crowd gets pumped for the pro finals. The crowd wouldn't have to vary from "golf quiet" to "soccer loud" every 3 minutes if they were allowed to just get into it.
Most sports, if the crowd yells, it is only encouragement. In paintball, of course, a shouter can actually influence the game. A few hundred shouters cancel each other out, though.

I don't know if Xball is the ideal form of paintball for TV, but it seems like it has a lot going for it. If PP gets their show on TV, it isn't due to 7 man format, which has been played in Europe for years, but because of superior marketing, policies that are sustainable, and the prizes that draw the cream of the sport.

We are singing from the same hymnal here, Nick. PP seems to run a better organised, more player and spectator friendly event, with more effective marketing among players and event locals. They have been more canny in getting TV coverage, as well.

As far as live coverage being imposssible, I am going to disagree with you. It would be expensive and difficult, but far from impossible. A media company owner I met at Skyball told me that he would rather edit live than go back through hours of video tape, but he cannot afford to do it for paintball, as he hasn't made any real money in paintball (compared to other video work).

OK, Momma's Crystal Ball was very clear late last night...she saw that PSP is gonna be running Full Auto 15BPS cap, and she claims they got some sorta remote sensor in the tower that can tell how quickly guns are firing...

Which begs the question, if you have that machine and a 15BPS cap - and most players can hit that figure with legal(ish) guns and Halos - why go FA?

Seems weird to me, but Momma was Adam Ant, complete with facepaint.

1--with a standard in the NXL they at least have the hope of maintaining some oversight (unlike before where the NXL had their own quiet mini-arms race going on). Hey, it could happen.

2--love that gag so much I've used it before myself (but not at P8ntballer or PGI)--it's just nobody seems to get it. What's wrong with people?
