If you want better reffing, you're going to have to PAY for it.
You mean I didn't pay for it at the World Cup? I paid 300$ in entry fees for the week and that isn't enough to cover a decent marshalling set up?

I don't believe the onus is just on us to pay more. But the organisers to pay more rather than just the minimum they can get away with. Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

If we look at the 10 man each player paid nearly 200$ in entries. For 8 games so that equates to the players (from both teams) paying 500$ for each game played... Just on entries alone. Can you seriously tell me that out of that 500$ per game there shouldn't be enough to cover more than 4 judges on a field. Since games were supposedly 15 mins (and granted a slight break between them  ) there was 1500-2000$ being payed per field per hour! We were paying enough for good judging.

Now I understand costs and overheads and all the rest, but don't try to kid me that we aren't already paying enough for a decent level of judging to be acquired.

The level of judging at other events and the Millennium series is better. We don't have to pay extra there.

So, better reffing, or $80 extra per player at each event you play?
You know what, on top of everything else I paid to be at the WC I would take that option.

I'd pay the extra 80$ for a guarenteed level of staffing numbers on the field and to have them paid more and thus be a better level hopefully...

I'd want it to be refundable if the numbers of judges fell short though...

Mother, is that you?
Alternatively, pgi could set up a marshal school both here in the Uk and the US. We fund it, we get the top bods to train em, we equip em, we register em. And then pgi officials dominate the 'real' tourny circuit at a premium price.

Do it!... or were you being sarcastic? heaven forbid :D

Isn't that what WDP are trying to do anyway. I would love to see more sponsors getting involved to support it. Are you?

What about the UKPSF tourney marshalls training course? That's hopefully being resurrected in the near future with some of the original EPSF team doing the training. ISTR this produced the best refs around & you had to pass an exam at the end (both practical & written) to prove you had taken it all on board - no getting certified just for attendance.

Actually....

$1750/8 games = $218.75/game, not $500.

And no, that's not nearly enough to pay for reffing, as you have to take out what it costs to set up the location (including 6 miles of netting) and take down the location (including 6 miles of netting), maintenence on the 6 miles of netting (plus hwatever new stuff you had to purchase) and the poles, transportation to get all that equipment on location, staffing to get your cars in and out, people to pick up the garbage, dispose of the garbage, pay for garbage disposal, tent rentals (not cheap) salaries and benefits of people like Rosie, Lane and Emily, promotional expenses, trophies, location scouting, insurance, taxes, 3% to the credit card company, bad checks, travel and accomodations for staff, printing of schedules and scoresheets, etc. Some of those items are small, but they all add up.

Believe me, entry fees don't cover it, so thank god vendors show up and kick in cash too.

And reffing in't just wages, at least half of their cost is airfare and lodging.

So yeah, if you want better reffing, you're going to have to pay for it, and given the choice between spending more money on reffing and NOT having entry fees go up $800/team, despite what people will say on web boards, when it comes to voting with their wallets they'll take the $80.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

$1750/8 is $218.75.

This two teams thing is a dirty trick I say!

Still, even at $440, it's not enough. I've crunched the numbers lots of times (based on total entry fees, not per-game, so my logical stupidity in the previous post is independent of the result ;)) and there just isn't enough money in events promotion to make it worth the bother. You'd make more money investing in the stock market.

The average customer just has no idea how expensive labor is and how quickly it adds up.
