COCKERS--> There is NO why any of the teams attending should in any way help out with the infrastructural side of the event. If there are still fields to put up when the players arrive then the event has been badly planned. Do you really think that Niall Squires (Campaign) will be asking teams at Campaign Cup walking the fields to help put up scaffolding, or put up netting?!?!?! I know for a fact that he won't! Everything will be done before the players even get anywhere near the site. Thats what the people employed by the organisers should do. I see nothing wrong with Storm standing aside (even if they hadn't of had safety reservations) because they were there to walk fields not build the event.

Sam:rolleyes:

Well said Sam, the voice of reason at last.

I cant believe someone is having a pop at us for not rushing over to wrestle with ruddy great scaffolding, which hadnt been put up properly (ie safely). Theres little point in going over what has already been said about safety issues etc. so I wont.

What I will say is, I thoroughly enjoyed the event, and thought it was very well run. We played against some great guys, we won a few and lost a few. But the best thing was, I didnt see anybody spit their dummy out, it was a great atmosphere.

Personally, I thought the marshalling was fantastic, not one dodgy call all day :)

It's just shame the shine has been taken off the day slightly, by someone having a go at us for not risking our safety.

Really what is the big deal with Storm NOT doing the scaffolding. It is good to see some postings from other people who are in agreement that they shouldn't.

As far as I am aware none of Storm are scaffolders (my apologies if I am wrong) so they should NOT have anything to do with setting up the scaffolding at any event. Come to think of it why should any team who is supposed to be playing it and not directly involved in setting up or running the event be doing it. Help is nice if you get it but don't expect it especially if you are going to slag off any teams kind enough to help for not doing enough.

After all you wouldn't do open heart surgery on someone if you weren't qualified to do so would you? Point is stuff like this is better to left to the professionals who do it for a living, after all could you guess who would get the blame if it had fallen down and injured someone? No doubt individuals who had been helping who had no right to be doing so.

OK so the netting wasn't perfect but what would you honestly prefer, the odd hole or Sparklie calling off the tourney as she nearly had too?
This is not in anyway intended as a dig at Ian but this is unfortunately a perfect example of something I feel very strongly about.

Anyone remember the mayor from Jaws? "Ah it's OK I mean it's only a dirty great killer shark...like what's he gonna do...eat people?"

Putting the light hearted view to one side for a moment as a responsible organiser if you have a choice between safety and canceling or postponing an event there simply is no choice! You postpone it, get it sorted and do it right. If players really want to take paintball forward as a sport this gung-ho kind of attitude needs nipping in the bud...one spectating 5 year old losing an eye is gonna have health and safety down on the whole tourney scene like a ton of bricks...

And if the claims start flying who's in the firing line? The event organiser? The host site? The scaffolding company? Dump it on the scaffy's then try finding another scaffy' company to supply your next event...Would Bricket Wood Leisure center be happy with headlines like "Child Loses Eye"? Then try finding the next venue willing to host an event...I know what I'd tell you to do with your tourney.

And what the insurance companies would do to paintball as whole is just not even in the equation...that's a whole different ball game altogether...but you could kiss goodbye to your tournaments unless you're prepared to start coughing up 500 quid or more entry fees cos after 1 incident that's what you'll be looking at. Most players have no idea how close we are to the edge on this one...

I know there's a few who think I'm a moaning old woman, but there is no excuse and no substitute for safety.

Said my piece.

the thing is, as me and smally have said, we had gone round quite a few times, making sure there were no holes, but throughout the course of the day, holes will be made by hot guns etc (i heard lots of hot guns on the chrony's)

I have to agree that holes in the netting is a cause for concern but I thought it was far better this time at bricket wood than last time and I don’t thinks it’s a case of people not bothering to cover the holes it’s the cable ties (that are needed for the netting in places) they may close the initial hole but then they make two more with the help of the wind, could the holes be patched better with something other than a hard tie that rips it more.

just a surggestion not a moan

Not knocking the guys running around with the cable ties at all... I had already noted that comment earlier and was actually impressed that someone was at least trying to address the issue.

Not to detract from my original point which was the idea that someone would find holes in the netting "acceptable"...but "hot guns" punching holes through netting begs three further questions...

1. Why were there hot guns on the field in the first place?

2. How hot does a gun a have to be to punch a hole through netting?

3. If a paintball gun at ANY velocity can punch a hole through netting then don't we need to review the material we're using for safety?

1>>>>in about half the games we played, while waiting to be chronied, we waited for the other team to be chronied, and instead of the marshall doing a 3 shot average, they ended up doing maybe 30 shots because the players set the guns so close to 300...basically it was like 299,301,299,300 etc etc.
our team set our guns at 280 so there is no chance of going hot.
2>>>> im not knowledgeable in the netting bit, but usually to break through, it wont be one hot shot, it might be a string of hot shots hitting the same area.
3>>>> the netting used, AFAIK is the same used at milleniums etc, EXCEPT we use about 5 metres tall of HIGH density netting, and i was told that milleniums use about 3 metres of high density, then 2 metres of low density on the top to create less of a sail effect. i havent been to a millenium so i am not entierly sure though so dont quote me.
