My general rule is...

I'll pull anyone shooting at players they should know are elminated. I have actually seen a player lose a mask during a game because they got bonus balled in the back of the neck, they put their hand up behind their head to protect their neck, and the glove cought on the goggle and pulled it off when the hand was removed.

Rules aside, bonus balling is stupid. I you're shooting at a dead player, that's paint you're not shooting at live players, and attention you should be paying to something else. Bonus balling isn't just a lack of maturity/sporsmanship, it's indicative of player who thinks it's more important to bully other players than play the game, and that's kinda sad.

One more note about how I ref overshooting as far as bunkering goes: I instruct players to stop shooting when they know they've marked the other guy, and if they're the bunkeree, to turn their back to the player coming to bunker them. If you shoot at a player, hit them, then get shot, then shoot them 20 more times, I'm going to pull both of you. If you shoot the player, then STOP shooting, then get shot, then I know to pull and possibly one-for-one the other guy.

Another situation is you get mugged, turn, and light the guy up the same time as your teammate lights the guy up. Frankly, I'm probably going to assume the hits were from you, leave the other player in, and pull you and your teammate - if you'd walked off, it'd at least have been an even trade.

Point is, shooting dead players just makes it harder for the refs to tell that you got them first, and makes it more likely you get pulled even though you had the first hit. I can't say I feel the slightest bit guilty as an official if a player gets pulled because they don't know when to lay off the trigger.

Excellent points, Chris. Agreed.

I HATE bullyism. Any player bullying me or anyone else while I'm judging is my legal prey. I'll turn into a bully.

it also depends in the kind of players you're around.. if you're playing with people who don't play often and don't really have any skill then do you think it's excuseable?

i remember a couple of weeks ago i was playing at long island indoor paintball and i got shot in the knee. when i was running out, i got pelted a few times in the side and 1 in the neck.

after the game, when i found out who it was i was ready to knock the sh!znits outta them.

also my dad who happened to be playing as well was complaining that 'those f*ckin beginners dont f*ckin listen when a ref calls people out'

maybe when theres beginners involved, the rules can be changed slightly? but then again, you don't wanna have someone playing their first time and you rip 3 shots in their neck and they decide they never wanna play again right?

Oh yeah. Any decent human being who happens to be a more advanced player will take it easy on players with much less experience.

Notice I said "decent human being". Add to that any decent human being who is reffing and has any resolve at all should penalize any player (celebrity pro or not) who clearly bonus-balls.

I think you guys misunderstood what I was trying to get at. If I see a player walking around a field, without his hand in the air. Or i'm unable to see if he's had his arm band removed, i'm going to shoot him. That doesn't mean 20 balls got off the field, at maximum 5 balls until I get a hit on him. Not sure what the people around your way are like for DMW, but my local field is renowned for it.

Common practice in the UK i'd say..............

Totally agreed, Simon. I hold to everything I've said but agree that if I see a player walking on field with out her/his marker up in the surrender position, I'll shoot a string also. I don't have time to study a player for a while. And I have seen players get backdoored by "dead-man's walk".

If as a judge I see you shoot a player that's out of bounds and it doesn't look like an honest mistake (I have to stretch out with my intuition here) then I'll penalize you. And I can make a mistake in my call just like in many other situations.

It's all of question of doing your job as a player or as a judge and doing the right thing at the right time.
