Keep this in mind,
If the guy dosen't move after the first few hits, it's his problem.

If you can lay 20 hits on a guy from afar.......I'll just shake your hand.

"It's only overshooting if the intent is malicious, not the number of hits."

That's how it was explained to me at World Cup.

So I guess I can keep shooting you if I have a pleasant smile on my face :) :p :D

There was no overshooting rule in the NPPL. There was just no rule in the rulebook. Just don't be malicious. Or don't let the ref think you're malicious.

Bob Long was ready to kill a PRO referee when the ref pulled his son Zach in the prelim game loss against Detroit Fusion. Zach had torched that little Fusion kid (Grant maybe?) as Grant left the field. The ref warned Zach multiple times to stop and Zach didn't so he got pulled. Bob lost his mind after the game because it did make a difference in the game.

Bob calmed down when one of the Farside kids explained that no one was pulled for overshooting. Zach was pulled for maliciously shooting the Fusion kid. That is a rule.

I had a fair share of grief from some players about so-called "over-shooting". I have a tendency to keep the balls flying until I've seen some kind of indication that the target is out, either by the player or a judge. I've had it happen too often that a player on whom I saw the ball break spin and take me out because I was too "merciful", and then have him tell me, "Sorry dude, I didn't know I was hit."

My former team-mates both complained and praised me for it.

playin at a tourny once and they said "more than 5 is overkill". our right tape launched a load of paint (well, 4 or 5) then stopped firin. back left looked out into this stream. four hit her in the mask. if a fifth had hit her what would you have done?

As has been said earlier the rules I work and play with don't specify how many shots. It only deals with unsportsmanlike conduct and here are the rules:
_____________________________
10.26. Players that engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, including, but not limited to...excessive shooting at an eliminated player after being warned by a judge to cease such activity...will be eliminated.
______________________________

So this is an area where a marshall has to JUDGE by body language, positioning and other factors what the intention of the shooter is. 5 or more hits certainly looks suspect to me, but I would continue to shoot (within limits, of course) at a player who continues to take an aggressive stanch and doesn't signal their eliminations until I saw or heard a judge call that player out. I may be wrong though. My purpose is not to hurt any player but to get that player effectively out of the game as quick as possible so I can move on to other things.

What I think anyway.

I think the key here is an eliminated player. If someone lights you up with four or five shots, you know you're out, and you put your arm in the air and walk off. I don't think anyone is going to complain to hard about that.
Where it becomes a matter of safety, is when you walk off the field and some creep decides to give you the bonus ball. I'm not talking about a stray shot here, i'm talking about a sting of paint, strait at you.
I think the thing here is intent, it's up to the referee to decide if the offending player intended to shoot a player the he knew was eliminated.

Good clues that a player is being bonus balled? The player is in open ground, hand above head, is hit several times, or is simply out of bounds.
Example, at Campaign Cup, a player from Bushwackers gets shot out of the 50s on the tape, then gets up and walks back to the dead zone with his hand in the air, and about 5 feet out of bounds. Then one of the twats from Dynasty hoses him for a good five seconds (remember these guys shoot 10+ balls/second). The player being bonusballed, puts his gun behind his head to protect him self and somehow manages to walk off field.
The player was clearly eleminated, his arm band was off, his hand and gun were in the air, and he was out of bounds. I believe the penalty for this offence is that you get pulled. but the judge didn't even bother to try and stop Dynasty from doing this, let alone penalise the offending player? (diablo field, banzais marshalling?)
My point is, it's not about playing fair, or pissing people off, it's about safety.
It's easy to over shoot someone, but when you're playing you're protecting your self. When you're walking off the field, you don't have the benifit of cover, you're totaly venerable to the opposions paint, especially if your back is turned, and your head is exposed.

As a judge, your first concern is for the safety of the players, followed by the enforcing of fair play. If a judge thinks you're being unsafe, they have to make it safe, and if it means taking you off the field, then that's what it takes.
