Big brother, id cards, a police state, all great ideas I'm sure. But why can't we just put more emphasis on securing our borders? Maintain tighter records of chemicals sold, then movement and creation of devices like these are resticted.

I understand the flaws in this, but why is focus placed on other aspects of prevention when I see these as the 2 things that need to be improved.

But mainly, I see no evidence that they would stop atrocities, none whatsoever. 9/11, last Friday, wouldn't have affected them...Spain has ID cards, it didn't stop Madrid.
Just because chemotherapy doesn't prevent all cancers from spreading doesn't then mean you don't use it....

The question should be, how many cases did the id cards prevent?

I was just about to make that point. :)

The trouble is you can't track events that don't happen or that are put off because of such measures.

So if we have one event people will say, 'look it still happens' but you can't tell if otherwise there would have been 11 such incidents.

Heck it makes my life harder, it has to make the terrorists life harder also! ;)

Which as you well know is unanswerable, therefore not worth raising...

Yep, but so are the lectronic tags criminals wear, so are implants under your skin...surely you have to draw the line somewhere.
Have they implemented the electronic registration plate tracking in the UK yet? I heard it was going to happen to track uninsured vehicles, but would also be used to catch speeders. :(

I also heard rumours that all new cars in the UK would come with tracking devices.

Many USA rental vehicles are now tracked, and with modern GM cars and 'on star' they can tell where you are at any given moment, and thus how you got there etc...

That bothers me more for some reason.

The government has already stated (Charles Clarke) that ID cards would not have stopped the attacks on Thursday. They would also have very little benefit in the prevention of terrorism. This directly from a government that has said that it wants them.

Stricter controls on chemicals would also fail to help since the high explosives were not made they were bought.

It is vital to understand that no matter how strict the rules are there will always be people with a determination to find a way round them. Enjoy your liberty, be cautious and alert but understand that this is one of the more unfortunate side effects of a democracy.

So, to link it to current paintball events, ;) if we can't tell how many cheaters the robot and judges stop, should we no longer have them?

:D Yay back on topic of the forums. :D

Forget id cards if you want to know where people are should be looking at rfid, but then people are being tracked constantly which i personally would not like.

The fact is things like this will always happen, their is no one clear way to stop it from happening. Measures can and should be taken to minimise the frequency of these attacks.

I personally feel our immigration policy has a lot to be desired, it annoys me that people claim asylum here but are they not ment to stop at the closest freindly country. I have no major problem with immigration after all it brings a lot of talented people into the country but some people can easily be identifed as undesirables, people with connections to terrorist etc, i cant understand why the government would let them stay.

These people were not immigrants in the term we have come to understand. These people had come to this country and lead successful and meaningful lives. They had legitimate businesses and happy families. The immigration policy of this country should really not be raised at this point since it is a very emotional and wholly different can of worms.

No, because you can tell when the robot catches a cheat, find me one - one - instance anywhere where a terrorist was caught cos he had or didn't have an ID card.

You won't be able to.

I agree with Hermitt's post above.
