Just stumbled into this little thread...and I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Speaking as a reporter of news rather than a maker thereof, I'm not quite sure what the hubub is all about. It seems to me that inertia is a major contributor in this sport. The PSP has a monsterous amount of inertia behind it, and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. People are just used to attending Jerry's events, and trying to reprogram them to look at an alternative is extremely difficult to do. In my own experience, I see this quite often. My team captain is an old-school PSP player, and broaching the subject of competing in a Super 7 immediately runs into a brick wall. The concept of playing in anything other than a PSP is alien to him. Inertia as a concept can be applied elsewhere too, but I'll leave that can of worms to open some other time.

As for the NPPL, it's my opinion that their greatest contribution to the sport has been that they've forced everyone to raise the bar a bit. And in the end, that's a positive thing. The concept of treating players better than they have been in the past, media blitzes (within and without the sport) are things that are expected now, rather than the novelty that it was in the NPPL's first season.

The NXL being on TV is a good thing. I hope for their sake that it's a success, but it has served its' purpose if it further publicizes the sport.

And Lane, much respect to you...after years of critiquing and commenting on everyone else's events, a cabal of paintball hardcases including myself are putting up now and doing our own major event next year...just the vendor packet alone was a major undertaking! At least the things that lie ahead will be more action oriented rather than engaging my mind, which a dubious proposition at best.

It comes from my background in aviation...not a good idea to get too terribly excited when talking about a $100,000 display. And for the record, I hold an Associate's in Applied Science...for which I went to a tech school for, rather than a proper university.

And while I enjoy bowling from time to time, I find the fact that it and Poker are given more time in the spotlight than Paintball a bit nauseating. But then again I've been playing paintball for 16 years, not bowling or playing poker.

Oh and Robbo, could you check your aceville email? There's a little something in there that you may want to chew on a bit, or just fob it off to Lambini.

'festive' (I gather that means gay)
and
'it only takes one ball' (great one Nick!)

Thats the best you can do huh?

I wonder what an avid young professional bowler would have to say if he was asked 'whats wrong with Paintball?'

Maybe thats why they get more airtime? They have nothing to play down, while we are constantly battling the 'gun' thing. I heard Charlton Heston Bowls though, so there must be something better (meaning worse) we can say about it....

I Love The Fun Police
Ready to get even more pissed off? The US National Spelling Bee was shown on ESPN everyday for like three weeks straight. Not only that but Magic the Gathering the Card Game Tournament has been shown in the past. How about jump rope competitions and cheerleading displays? THe channel calle Electronic SPorts Network sure shows alot of festive crap. How is it possible the show will fail? Obviously there are people willing to watch whatever junk is forced down there throats. Hooray for American Media. Why can't the fun police do something about it?

Hey Furbs, no real need to get excited when observing the obvious mate, it just needs commenting upon in a proportionate manner and your description could well be classed as 'a bit' of an understatement :)

As for what's in my mail box, not seen anything yet.

Actually, bowling gets as much airtime and fan base as it does because the Professional Bowling Association was acquired by some guys with brains, balls, and backing who could get it done--a couple of top guys from Microsoft and PR and marketing guy from Nike. The bought it out from under bankruptcy and made it profitable and sold it to EVERYONE. They didn't dumb it down one bit to accomplish it, either. They focused on exciting players (well, as exciting as bowlers get) and took golf's approach of "Hey this guy is good, but he's just like you. You can do this at home." AND, most importantly, they brought competent, capable, trained, and experienced sportscasters and cameramen to present it in polished form.

--This info from the article from two month's ago issue of Wired, article entitled "Kingpins."

Now if they can do this with bowling, in about 3-4 years, to surpass the NHL in viewers, WTF is so hard about doing this with paintball? It's exactly the route that should be taken. There is absolutely no excuse or reason now that it has been demonstrated that it can be done.
