Granted if your a fast bowler. If your a out fielder you may not see any action all day. My point being you wont always see atheltes at sports, sometimes then dont need to be
Okay, let's define athlete, and f*ck what the dictionaru says...
To me an athlete is somebody that is trained in such a way that he is capable of engaging in his field of endeavour to his maximum potential, or close to maximum.
Perhaps with darts this means you can have a gut the size of a small country, I don't know enough about the "sport" to confirm this.
To reach this potential, you need to train a lot. Doing constant physical and mental reps...

There is next to f*ck all of this going on in paintball (few exceptions). Even many of the top players are not true athletes in that sense, as they can not or will not train to such an extent that they reach the zenith of their potential. They are only good or great because they are compared to unfit people. If however these same people who seem to have a natural talent for the game, combine this talent with true training (which is a whole lot more than just playing games), they will be able to reach their full potential.
Imagine how deadly somebody like mister Lang will be if he had some people coach him on his running skills. Imagine what would happen if all the pointmen in the leagues would be able to increase their speed by 25% (this IS possible).
If you are NOT working on becoming a better paintballer 5-7 days a week, be it on the field, or in the gym, or studying game film from your opponents, you are NOT an athlete.

I know people don't want to hear this, but they are really just kidding themselves.

^^^ I think Buddha was spot on; a lot of people take part in the sport 'a lot' but they aren't athletes...

Martin.
Indeed. And if you train once a week, then you don't participate a lot.
Face it, most paintball teams/players, for whatever valid reason, engage in the sport less often than people that play in the loadsabeerpubsoccer leagues. And be honest, as things are now, if you play paintball once a week, that is a lot for most people. People that train once or twice a week and play a game of soccer on sunday ain't athletes neither. They're hobbyists.

Even the way most teams go about training demonstrates that they really don't participate in a sport. For most teams training is just locking horns with any team that is available that day. That ain't training. Well, it's just a small part of what training is. If you really want to say that you train, you have to take the reductionist approach like the Russians did, and break paintball down into it's base components. And for each of these components you need to find coaches that can teach you how to excel at it. Besides that, when you are not training with the team, doing drills with the coaches, or scrimmaging amongst yourselves or against another team, you should go to the gym and work on your paintball related fitness. This would involve things like the crosstrainer, increasing the strength of your arms and upper legs. I'm not talking about doing benchpresses with some 220 lbs, or doing squats with even more than that, as this would make you too strong for paintball (and too big). But what you need is something that'll make it easier for your legs to support you while standing or moving in a crouching posture, or things that'll make it easier for your arms to keep your gun up.

Give it a try. Go to your nearest field and set a timer for 7 minutes. Than walk around, shoot at things, whatever, but for the full 7 minutes keep your gun up as if you were shooting it. If after those seven minutes your arms are heavy, feel sore or whatever, you are NOT in shape to play paintball. Simple. A backguy should be able to keep his gun up for the entire game. A pointguy should be able to walk around at two thirds of his height for 7 minutes. A real player would be able to do both at the same time. I guarantee you that 99% of you can't do that. And that'll include pro players too. I read in another thread that some of the Dynasty boys were totally exhausted after they had a two or three day training binge of something like 6 hours each day. Sorry to say, but then you ain't an athlete. And you're supposed to be the zenith of this game.... If you can't perform at your own game for that amount of time, then you don't deserve the title of pro player. And that would mean that a lot of the top dogs in this game really could do better if REAL and PROPER training got done, including such boring things as conditioning, which very few teams do.

Not meant to glorify myself, but as many of you know I play American football. Last april my team went to France to play against a team from Paris. Here's how that week looked for me"
Monday: Three hour intensive workout in the gym. Two hour team training, running plays and doing individual reps.
Tuesday: Four hour stint in the gym.
Wednesday: One hour spent with a track coach, working on sprinting techniques and speed. Three hour team training, running plays and doing individual reps.
Thursday: Four hours stint in the gym.
Friday: Travel to paris. Light workout in the evening to relieve muscles after 8 hour coach drive.
Saturday: Three hours team training, running plays and individual reps. Evening spent three hours studying film of opponent.
Sunday: Wage war for three hours. Kill a few French. Drive home again.

Was I wasted after that weekend? No. ****, we had another game the weekend after that! How come I was not wasted? Because I trained so that my level of fitness is such that this is routine for me. That way I can always function at the top of my ability when I enter the field.
There is next to zero of that in paintball. Teams get by on talent alone. But until somebody manages to get the talent on his team AND does real proper training, this team will kill everything in their path until the rest realises what's what. What the Legion did a few years ago is only a hint of the future...

So yes, paintball is a sport, but most of us ain't paintball athletes. Just players.
