How come I see near to zero athletes at events? (notice I say near to zero, not just zero...)

The same reason you dont see athletes at darts, cricket, snooker, the list is long but there all sports

Try bowling up to 45 overs (6 balls in each) a day for 2 days straight, batting for a day & a half then doing it all over again, I think that qualifys as athletic.

Sports have to fit certain criteria to be classed as sports, otherwise they're physical/outdoor recreation some are;

Time (start time and match time) and Space are defined by 'rules'
It's got to be competative
It must be organized and governed by a certain set of rules

The list goes on, needless to say tournement events within paintball are sporting events, punterball/recball is more outdoor recreation with a physical element.

Granted if your a fast bowler. If your a out fielder you may not see any action all day. My point being you wont always see atheltes at sports, sometimes then dont need to be

Point taken, but the guys up in the ring doing all the running are usually the batsmen who have to go out in maybe a few hours or a days time and put together a decnet innings, the guys on the boundary getting less of the ball are the fast bowlers that have to doing something then and there. Panesar is an exception, he just can't field (or bat for that matter) and so has to be hidden out on the boundary where he can cost us less runs.

I dont really know much about cricket but you can see what im saying.

If we were to class 'sport' as an athletic event (by that i mean to include athletes) then we'd lose a huge amount of sports
