for russ, maybe one way to go

Hi Paul

Thanks for your mail below -

Over the past 18 Months we`ve had several mails to the effect of yours and have sold a couple of our lids to individual users (which have subsequently been due to receiving hits to the head).

Designing and manufacturing a product that is Specific to a niche sport is unfortunately driven by market size.

I`m sure that paintball has a huge following, but are paintballers "fashion conscious" and no matter how much pain they go through won`t wear a helmet (same sort of thing can be applied to surfing, which is the sport that I greatly enjoy).

Having said all this, Gecko are always keen to look at and try to provide a product for a niche market. So if you wanted to send some current masks down to us, then we will happily size up with some of the helmets here, to see if we are anywhere near the mark.

As a paintballer, do you have any specific requirements? or is it simply a need for a lightweight helmet that will interact with the mask(s) that are used.

Also, do you have a govening body that stipulates that if a helmet is worn then it must meet particular impact requirements ?

Our postal address is - Gecko Head gear Ltd, 14b Kings Hill Industrial Estate, Bude, Cornwall, EX23 8LT (01288) 355988

Look forward to hearing from you,

Kind Regards

A little perspective here.

The reason plyers in the 90's went maskless was for bouncers and face recognition. It wasn't until ome magazine editors threw a fit that masks were made manditory because, as the reality was, "Monkey see monkey do." Kids dind't wear masks, got welts on the face, and parents complained. It wasn't the players that wanted it, it was the media.

Ok, fast forward to today. Again, I think that paintball is trying to disguise cheating as 'safety'. I also think that there should be enough leeway to allow individual players to choose how much protection they think they need. I say this becasue if I'm required to wear a helmet, I may have to quit paintball out of fear collasping or overheating. (I can do helmets in winter becasue it's colder, and snow helmets hold headphones on nicely...)

But that's me. I don't think I could do it. But I'm also a minimalist for protective gear, if I cna get away with it.

It used to be that wearing a neoprene neck guard was called cheating, now it's called legal.

That sounds a bit wierd. I'm the new generation and have no idea about the past so can anybody tell me why neck guards were considered cheating?

The neoprene throat protectors are rubbish, way to thin to stop any pain from close up shots, I went outside the Paintball Industry to get mine...plus it was cheaper as well (nice bonus)
Wal-mart and places like that sell them as well as sports shops. I get loadsa comments about the wearing of mine (all positive !!) basically saying "what a brilliant idea so much better than the paintball ones" Follow the link to see what I mean, the one I use is the N7 (though mine is an older design)

The same people I have looked at for a helmet but they aren't quite right to be able to wear your googles as well...note I was looking for the helmets purely for reffing only 'cos you do get nailed a lot in the head as a ref when checking players. Plus the makers of these helmets and other makers too make them to withstand a way harder hit than a paintball will ever inflict.

P.S. K2 I have the pic of your "golf player" to send to you, email me the direct email addy I'll send it off

Ok, this is the 3rd time I've tried to type this in, so forgive me if I'm being brief.

1994 : Fred Moultoun Jr. Makes a product caleld a "Scarf-O-Matic". It's a bandana with a foam layer sewn into it, and is formed to keep one's throat protected. He gets a lot of flack for selling this, because he's told that it's condonign cheating.

NOW, you've got neoprene everything. The original rules of he first game BANNED neoprene suits, remember. My point? It'sbeing sold as 'safety', but IMHO, it's condoning cheating in a lot of cases.

Me? I have a floating bone chip in my elbow, bad knees, and a bad back. I'll protect what i've got left, but I'd still prefer an slimmer option.
