Well this thread sure proves a theory I've had for some time......

I'm sure when the sun comes up on the Fun Police Precinct, Baca will be flying around hereabouts on his cereal bowl, but does noone else have any thoughts???

Anybody?

OK, OK, force me to write something constructive why don't you

I agree that Xball is a good format, for all the points raised here and elsewhere. The intensity, the agression, the longer game times meaning you can gain a sense of following something through and the (sometimes) nail biting finishes and comebacks.

But I also like the 7man way, and its obviously popular.

Here's my guess for an NPPL format every div can play that is more of a tweak but is basically using 7 man rules.

NPPL has 18 Pro teams, so 2 Divs of 9 give the normal 8 prelim games. Everyone else in their usual also ran divs playing amongst themselves.

Top 8 from each go into Sunday. 1st plays 8th, 2nd, 7th etc - sudden death in best of 3 games through to a final, play off for 3/4th maybe. Thats an easy system, everyone gets similar number of games, easy to sell and visualise too. Also gives the incentive to get the best score in prelims, you get best draw on Sunday.

The best of 3 might be tweaked, you could run a 15min total game time idea, most points scored within the time etc. Scheduling wouldn't be difficult, 4 divs with 8 x 15 min games each you'd probably need 2 finals fields for Sunday. All 4 divisional finals could be on NPPL field too over a couple of hours.

How about that? :)

Of course they're changing (or modifying) the format for Pros only. But say it's something like SuperLeague--then it's still 7-man, isn't it, and claim could be made that training, prep and lower level play still feed into Pro format. Besides, if you think we're forever going to have Pros playing in the traveling roadshow tourney format of 150+ teams competing you need to get off the pipe now before there's nothing left of you but a mindless, quivering mass institutionalized by the State.

EDIT ADDED: Beaks, didn't see your post above prior to posting but if the straightjacket fits, wear it! :)

was discussing this very thing with duncster the other day. I have always liked seven man, but you know when you play a team and you lose, I have always wanted a chance to go back out at them again straight away. Xball gives you this but with a very cost uneffective angle.

They bought out a best of three games in the finals matches of seven man and I wondered why they didnt do this across the prelims also. I mean allocate the teams a 15 minute slot where they get 1 minute turn arounds (or maybe longer) and they can try to cram in 2-3 games on a seven man field. Or do a straight best of three.

I think the time it takes to run the tournament would increase, but it would give teams a real chance and a fairer score line.

Hell, I never said I thought it was a good idea, just one that would apease the "everyone plays the same" idealists, and the one who say "we need 150+ teams to make a profit".

I completely agree that once the income for an event changes from being pimarily supplied by the participants in entry fees to originating from the sponsors, vendors and (maybe) TV rights or spectators, then yes, the lower Divisions will fall away. There will be no reason at all to provide an event of such magnitude when all your income is focused and generated by the top 18 ot whatever teams. THere will probably be partner or feeder series, maybe even still run by PP or whatever, but they wont be quite the same the same sand pit the big boys play in.

That is exactly what I think about NXL, if the TV deal came through and the money poured in you'd see the death of PSP events faster than an Xball break out
