I was watching the dartford 7's on sunday and thought it was a great tourny. Good fields, location etc and the weather sure helped

what were people's views on the marshells. There were a few arguements i saw on each field. But i thought they were ok

certainly the 'physical problem' that nearly took off on field 3 was well handled

people's views??

There will always be bad calls and arguments.
Especially when the majority of marshalls on a field have never marshalled a tourney before.
Considering that I don't think that we did too bad I can still appreciate any constructive criticism players have.

What I do not appreciate are sideline marshalls, if you wanna ref come on the other side of the netting.

We had no problems with the marshalling... saw a few things with other teams that could of been called either way... but that will always happen... on a whole it was a good show... :)

I didnt really have a problem at all with the marshalling, a few bad calls, it happens though. All in all, pretty good :)

I do think there were a couple of problems with the marshalling. I don't like criticism along the lines of "the marshalling was crap" cos at the end of the day that helps no one. Unfortunately, sometimes the marshals get 99% right and its the 1% that everyone talks about. Without marshals you have no tournament and these guys get bugger all for the work they put in. However, perhaps some constructive criticism from a personal point of view of what I experienced on Sunday:

1. Some of the marshals needed to be in better positions - unless you are standing with your back to where the paint is coming from you are unlikely to see the hits. Standing behind a player who is getting shot at is no good. Particularly I think on the powerball field, there were plenty of marshals around but frequently they were on the sidelines and not moving with the play.

2. Listen to the players' calls more - often a player will shout "check him" in a fairly vague and hopeful way. But when a player is telling you exactly where a hit has gone, he is more likely to be right - "Marshall - back left stand-up has a direct hit on his hopper" is a pretty direct statement that deserves checking out.

3. Don't be afraid to stand up to players. In one game (I wasn't involved in) I saw a marshal wipe a shot from a player after being told it was just spray. I don't believe any marshal would have looked at the hit and said it was just spray but an experienced player saying something confidently to an inexperienced marshal led to a wrong decision. Stick to your guns!

4. If you call a player neutral he must not be moved on. Make sure you are in a position to a) check the player but b) see that no one is moving up on him. The alternative is don't call him neutral and just carry out the check without getting in the way of play or asking him to change his position.

A final comment - 'Sideline marshalling' - Commenting on matters of judgement is not for spectators. However, in my opinion, if a spectator can see a hit on a player, he should be at liberty to point it out. This is not affecting play, simply aiding the marshals and ensuring fairness.

Thanks to all the teams we played on Sunday and particular thanks to all the marshals. I certainly appreciate that you guys have a hard job - I've done it many times myself. See you at the next leg!

Nothing springs to mind for bad calls with us...the only thing I did notice whilst watching other games is a couple of marshals concentration span was lacking. This was particularly on field 2 more than once I saw marshalls distracted by players moving in the snake on field one.

I've been there, it's easy to do especially when you start getting tired. Other than that - all good! :)

We had only one or two bad calls the whole day, but this will happen on any tourney. All in all the marshalls did a good job, although sometimes they should have been a bit more close to the players themselves(e.g. sideline marshalling).

But that's probably because of the lack of marshalling experience.(not that i have any)

Great tourney, and marshall's did a great job getting all the games running and time etc. etc.

Tubbie (yeah yeah i was the goodlooking one of the bunch :) )

May I just say even though there were a few problems with yesterday I believe that the more I believe that experienced marshal’s/ players should only represent this area as the games themselves are becoming more aggressive and faster, with bad marshal calls this can upset a team in many ways. Apart from this giving the poor person who put the tournament/ event in the first place a worry if he or she is doing the right thing. Yes we did have some bad calls yesterday but we also received good calls as well, I will not go into the bad ones.

So give the marshal’s a slap on the back for trying as if they did not turn up yesterday we would have had to look after ourselves.

Marshall’s please do yourselves a favor and read the rules as it save embarrassment later on. If a player runs down a field and gets shot but continues his run and then shoots an opponent out what penalty should the other team get. (Example)
Also I noticed a lot of marshal’s calling players neutral but not correctly giving the hand signals and then pulling players out while they were being checked because they get mugged or shot whilst they are checking them over. Come on _ Neutral player one hand on the player the other in the air ...

If i am wrong please say

Dave Stewart would like to give a huge thanks all the teams, helpers, marshalls, vendors and spectators that attended and showed there support.
Big thanks to Pete Martin and his crew for helping with the field designs.

We looks forward to the next tournament and all criticisms raised on these boards or on the day will be taken on board to make the next tournament a better one.

Once again, thanks.

yes there was a few bad calls by marshalls tell me a tourney where it doesnt happen what doesnt help are the players that get hit in self check areas and dont call them selves out and im sure the marshals dont start a thread saying the teams at that last tourney were crap so why do we do it to
marshals
referees
umpires etc
:p
