I do think there were a couple of problems with the marshalling. I don't like criticism along the lines of "the marshalling was crap" cos at the end of the day that helps no one. Unfortunately, sometimes the marshals get 99% right and its the 1% that everyone talks about. Without marshals you have no tournament and these guys get bugger all for the work they put in. However, perhaps some constructive criticism from a personal point of view of what I experienced on Sunday:
1. Some of the marshals needed to be in better positions - unless you are standing with your back to where the paint is coming from you are unlikely to see the hits. Standing behind a player who is getting shot at is no good. Particularly I think on the powerball field, there were plenty of marshals around but frequently they were on the sidelines and not moving with the play.
2. Listen to the players' calls more - often a player will shout "check him" in a fairly vague and hopeful way. But when a player is telling you exactly where a hit has gone, he is more likely to be right - "Marshall - back left stand-up has a direct hit on his hopper" is a pretty direct statement that deserves checking out.
3. Don't be afraid to stand up to players. In one game (I wasn't involved in) I saw a marshal wipe a shot from a player after being told it was just spray. I don't believe any marshal would have looked at the hit and said it was just spray but an experienced player saying something confidently to an inexperienced marshal led to a wrong decision. Stick to your guns!
4. If you call a player neutral he must not be moved on. Make sure you are in a position to a) check the player but b) see that no one is moving up on him. The alternative is don't call him neutral and just carry out the check without getting in the way of play or asking him to change his position.
A final comment - 'Sideline marshalling' - Commenting on matters of judgement is not for spectators. However, in my opinion, if a spectator can see a hit on a player, he should be at liberty to point it out. This is not affecting play, simply aiding the marshals and ensuring fairness.
Thanks to all the teams we played on Sunday and particular thanks to all the marshals. I certainly appreciate that you guys have a hard job - I've done it many times myself. See you at the next leg!
