I can see the problem...

.. that many people seem to be alluding too here.

We have call that basically means "Watch me... when I go, everyone follow". Not sure of the terminology TJ2 is using but 'freight training' sounds like it might have a very similar end result i.e. everyone rushes the field.

The very nature of that move presents the possibilty of it being compared to a deliberate 'playing on' tactic... how's the ref gonna know when it all comes down to intent again?

Whass tha deal with freight training in tha Millennium - y'all got a specific rule to stop that?

peace
Last time I downloaded the rules from the Millennium site, it stated that you are ofcourse allowed to run behind eachother, but when the first guy gets tagged, and he basically keeps being in the way of the other guys, the refs are allowed to pull one or more players from the game. So freight training is not allowed...
Never seen it happen, come to think of it.

Freight training used to be more common in the woods. Basically it means one player running down the field & at least one but usually more of his team mates following him/her and using the first player's body as a shield for the paint coming in.

Interesting quote from Mike Lynch (ex-Naughty Dogs, now Shocktech):

Lynch has some pretty strong opinions about some of the hot topics in the sport. “Everybody cheats,” said Lynch adamantly, “I don’t care if they say they don’t, at some level they do, but I don’t really see it being that big of a problem. It's part of the game, the refs are on the field to do their job and enforce it.” However, many players say that it is a big problem and that penalties aren’t tough enough. “Players get a 3-for-1 if they’re caught cheating, I think it’s a sufficient penalty."

Ooooooooooooooooh!

Well, I guess that he's partially right.
A 3 for 1 is a pretty harsh penalty, and as such a nice deterrant. Hell, I can't think of any other sports with penalties that harsh. If you mess up in any other team sport (that I can think off right now), you and only you will be thrown from the game, not you and your buddies.
However, the reason that I agree only partially, is because as it is now, without the presence of a quality reffing body, not enforced as it should be (nothing new there).

One small part of

Lynch's statement bothers me a bit, and maybe it's just me--but it sounds to some extent like he is justifying or rationalising cheating. Otherwise I agree with him. Less time you worry about somebody else cheating and just play the game the better off you are.
Jay is also right tho as the integrity of the sport is tied less to the absence of "cheating" than the belief in the impartiality of the refs.

what bothers me is...

"Everyone cheats, I don't care what they say yada yada yada"

Is the guy ominiscient?

It's like the christians who interpret the bible and say 'What God was trying to say is..."

Wow - pardon me but I've never been THAT confident...

Mike, listen up: not 'everybody' cheats - but you patently do.

peace

Maestro, whose a grumpy gus today? Cheating is such a harsh word. :) Is this confrontational attitude really necessary? We're one big harmonious family, aren't we? And besides, everybody knows the way to deal with cheaters is to bonus ball the bejezus out of 'em.

PS--I'll be happy to clue you in on what God was trying to say--anytime. :D

You can't touch me there again if that's what you mean...not with that anyway.

;)

Monday is confrontational day and tha guy's attitude stinks IMHO..speak for yourself all you want, and let others do tha same.

Nothing to do with tha fact that PGI has just sent a Hall of Fame on tha Dogs to tha printers, with all their members saying how they love each other and will never leave - and on the self-same day it goes to tha press we find out one of the ****ers leaves!

Aaaaaaaargh.
