Bonus Balling....

or slid into a bunker at full pelt and broken your leg. Fear = adrenaline = tha rush of sitting in that front bunker and hearing the almighty pounding that means someone's about to launch themselves over your bunker and dump a shedload of pain into you, or you're about to do tha same to them.

ok, there is a possibilty of breakages that is a calculated risk, not a big factor. being shot close range does hurt, but I wouldn`t really call that a danger, you rarely get more than a bruise or a headache.

It may be just me being naive but I wouldn`t call it dangerous, is this not something we want to get away from if we are going to be recognised.

I don't think we should get away from tha danger - real or perceived - thang at all...I was more incredulous that Richard had a problem with someone being double-tapped in tha head. I see nothing wrong with that in tha slightest.

I don';t think pball is dangerous, I get worried being people moan about being bonus balled or shot from close range, cos it sounds like trtying to de-fang an already, by X-standards at least, soft sport.

TJ - I class paintball as an ADRENALINE sport rather than an extreme sport, and I thought this was argued out here on the boards a few months back. I got more damage from that nice, ladylike non-extreme sport horseriding than I ever have or likely ever will from paintballing. But I think you're just being contentious for the sake of it anyway!:p

I can see arguments for both sides of this discussion. On one hand, I've been bonus-balled myself a few times over the years & I hate it! 15-20 shots after I've called myself out, have my gun in the air pointing to the sky in one hand & maybe an empty pot above my head in the other, desperately trying to get out of the bunker so I can leave the field; then getting shot a further few times as I try to limp off. Or the occasion where I was the last player left in against 4, shooting out of one side of the barricade at 3 of them, did the remaining player HAVE to put over 20 shots into my back at close range running all the way from my neck to my knee?
On the other hand, there are some players that just don't stop until you've put at least 6-8 shots on them, preferably on their goggles so they can't see anything.

"When I wuz young", many years ago & when paintball was still in the woods, most tournaments DId have penalties for over aggressive play - wonder when that ended?

When guns got faster and the bunkers got waaaaaay closer together I think.

In my experience, most bonus balling comes when a player is wandering off tha field rather than getting the **** outta dodge as quick as his little legs will carry him.

As I said, it was Richard's comment that really worried me...maybe it's just me but when I take a run and dive over a buner, those two shots are going into tha first bit of player I see...groin, head, back, whatever. Similarly, when I go round a bunker I won't put a shot into a guy's pack because 9 times outta 10 he'll spin and we're both walking...two in tha back of tha head reduces that ratio considerably.

Agree with Liz about the adrenalin thing - it's what gives you your rush, not necessarily danger. Ever been parachuting? The enjoyment comes from the experience. It's extreme, but if you follow the procedures, inherently quite safe. Why?

Because you don't want to take any risks when you jump out of an aircraft. Common sense, really. Dead people suck at sports that involve anything other than lying very still and decomposing.

Actually getting enjoyment from dangerous things is quite a different thing (and into the realms of personality disorders, methinks).

But most "extreme" sports are those where as much actual danger is removed due to setting, kit, rules, styles etc.

Change mountain biking to "drive your bike over a rocky ravine and see if you survive the 30ft drop". Not so many takers, but I'm sure there would be a few stupid people, who would soon become stupid dead people, and then the problem goes away.

Yes there's risk. For the sedentary population who's idea of sport is watching a game on telly and downing a few beers, it may even seem violently extreme, but really - who wants to participate in a sport where you want to run a major risk of serious injury every time you play or (getting back to the subject of the thread), get injured by people who ignore basic safety rules? Fancy a "no goggs" game of paintball for the ultimate extreme challenge? Neither do I.

I think paintball's after the type of people who skate in-line, snowboard, BMX, etc because they are the type who are more open to sports not considered "mainstream" (and good for them). Given the popularity of "X-games", it's prudent to orientate tourney ball towards this (style, venue, clothes, vocabulary) as it's attracting lots of people at the moment.

Paintball = extreme sport? LMAO...

If you don't wanne get hurt, don't play...same as with mountain biking, boarding, skating etc....no risk, no danger = no fun.
the mugger walked round the bunker, took aim and then shot. it wasn't him running down the field then mugging. he took his time.
