All-new PGI

Just finished reading through the new style PGI and throwing in my €0.02 I actually preferred the old PGI (sorry Duffy/Rancid et al)

The new design appears to put form ahead of function. Whilst at some level it may perhaps be stylistically superior it just seems to be more cluttered and hard to read

As for the cover design. Although more cutting-edge I doubt it'll have the longevity of the old PGI logo

New PGI = New Coke??? :p ;)

Just got this months PGI - really like the new look.

Reminds me of a lot of New York based publications I read (Res for example)

I also really like the faded/b+w images in a lot of the articles and don't find the font a problem at all :) Two thumbs up here...

Hey Hotpoint, in all seriousness, if you had come on here and told us all you liked the magazine, we would most definitely have to go back to the drawing board and do a re-think, so at least we all now know we are going in the right direction of a youth centred-sophisticated-modern-edgey publication.
Many thanks for your input Hotpoint; albeit by default it helped us :)

Hey Famine, just a little heads up for the guys who read your post and might erroneously attach some credence to it, eveybody just take a little look at Famine's sig pic.
Now presumably he put that up there because he thinks it looks good...we at PGI rest our case :)
Hey Robbo, The art work etc in my sig pic is from "Apocalypse Paintball" Was designed by a comic book artist and of all the comments from the many people that see it through brochure and site advertisment, you are the only person to slate it. Now that seems odd to me. I dislike the new layout, so you dislike my sig.
Fair enough. But i aint that shallow.

Not gonna get into a argument over this, but i have now recieved 1 dislike to my sig/logo compared to how many on the new design PGI? ;)

Now let me state my opinion, and if ya dont like it then pffft, i am not alone in my thoughts though :)

Must admit, the Mag will appeal a lot to the Yanks, its there kinda layout. But i wouldnt say its international.
I think this issue has great content, just not used to the simple basic design that our american cousins favour.
Maybe a blend of the two would help both sides of the pond.

Just another little bit to add, Isnt it important for a company to have product identity? in which case surely it would make sense for this site and the mag to at least match up in logo and look?

Just my 2ps worth you understand :)

how much effort does it take to make a black to red fade background then add some logos?

it's not the effort that matters it's the final look. (Otherwise only oil paintings would be considered art.........they take effort) most art/design is more about inspiration...........does the final product work? so, soes the new PGI cover stand out better than the last one on a shelf full of "complex and hard work" titles? can you tell what it's about at a glance?

I think so, therefore it's doing it's job.
How many of the 30 odd year old complainers are going to stop buying it because they don't like the new cover?
How many newbies will spot it in a newsagent and think....."a paintball mag? never seen them before"( the old cover was cool...but in a rack of mountain bike mags etc blended in). People are starting to get an interest in our sport (thank you PA cup and they think it's all over) the new cover will grab their attention. PGI doesn't need style to sell to us.........the content does that. The style is there to grab the attention of new readers. And I think the new look will do what it's designed to do.

The logo on here will be changing, but the web guys aren't on a p8ntballer cycle at the moment so all their efforts are going to other sites we own - they have a (very) small amount of time to spend on P8ntballer each month.

Stylistically, no, because what works on the page does not necessarily work online and vice versa - different mediums demand different stylings.

Since design (like fashion) is broadly cyclical I am both retro and simultaneously ahead of my time ;)

And as for "New PGI" Vs "PGI Classic" time will tell... trust me the new look logo will not last as long as the old one. To draw a parallel in architecture, fads come and go (gothic styling, post-modernism etc etc) but corinthian columns are forever

BTW you can't really be "edgy" if you are basing your new look on style/design ideas you gained from looking at other already extant publications :p

Actually I think the lack of colour in the new logo means it doesn't stand out as much as the old one (not eye-catching)... but then I'm "30 odd" (well 29 anyway) :D

You live in a vaccuum, Hotpoint?

See what I did there? But anyways...

>BTW you can't really be "edgy" if you are basing your new look on style/design ideas you gained from looking at other already extant publications <

Influenced by, not based on...dude every author and band that are worth their salt are edgy, yet are openly influenced by those who have gone before.

And you're right about the logo, mag logos shouldn't last that long - 7 years waaaaaaaay too long to keep the same masthead - tha boys have bin lazy!

I hope that within the next two years the sport and mag are established enough so our masthead just becomes PGI. Or TJI.

Either's cool with moi.

Famine, I think he was ragging you... you know, like, if you like that sig then you've got no taste. But hey, I like the 'shallow' comment, cos that's kinda like... what's the word for it... you know like by denying it, you prove it. I can't think of the word.

Not gonna get into an argument over this, but i have now recieved 1 dislike to my sig/logo compared to how many on the new design PGI? ;)

There you go again. 'I'm not shallow, but I've only had one complaint and you've had... I win I win i win.' C'mon now, there's no need.

Now let me state my opinion,

Hold the front page, Famine is about to give us his opinion.... C'mon guy, lighten up. You shouldn't over-dub drumrolls.

and if ya dont like it then pffft, i am not alone in my thoughts though :)

Blimey, he's done it again, but it doesn't make your thoughts right does it? I mean that's really arrogant, you know like 'me and my friends don't like it' nah nah ni nah nah.'

Must admit, the Mag will appeal a lot to the Yanks, its there kinda layout. But i wouldnt say its international.

You know, if that'd been your first post we'd be having a good discussion now. Interesting point, bit of back-up and a solution. And no insults. Who told you to write that?

Just another little bit to add, Isnt it important for a company to have product identity? in which case surely it would make sense for this site and the mag to at least match up in logo and look?

Tch. But now you go and spoil it again by trying to have a pop, and trying to put us down.... I guess Famine that you're probably some kind of graphic designer, or animator(?) or involved in marketing, or probably the md of a little go-ahead company, but you know, if you actually took the big 'I am' out of your posts, you might actually get your points listened to.

It makes me wonder when I read posts like yours, how you actually survive in life: ' this is ****' 'this is crap' 'that's lazy' etc. Blimey, if most of us spoke to people like that we'd never have any friends. You do speak to people like that don't you... you know, to their faces?
