================

I've now seen the article, and the final line is a quote from the mother something along the lines of (not exact, cos I don't remember things exactly at this time on a Friday night! ;) )

"They [the guns] some with goggles, but the kids don't bother to wear them"

Personally (and I know that cos of paintball I have more safety awareness but still) I'd have been making sure my kids followed all safety recommendations - I mean, imagine a parent letting a 10 year old in a go-karting race, and not bothering about whether or not the kid wears a helmet.

However, lets all hope the kids eyesight is saved, and lets get something positive out of this.

Self-regulation before regulation is imposed upon us.

SAFETY

I think the other issue to deal with here is that a paintball marke is not governed by the fireams act, and in fact all the existing 'air weapon' legislation doesent apply.
Since ive become interested in this sport, the first element and the most projected is safety. In fact, the advice given to those starting and to those current is to make the goggles the most important buy you make. Goggles first, Marker second. Anyone who reads into the world of paintball will see this, so all is not lost. Self-regulation is a very good idea, and is a definite must to any growing sport, and it takes the 'names' in this sport to want it.
The only way any legislation would possibly change the way markers are sold, would be in line with the air weapons. Under 17's would need to be surpervised by someone over 21, all markers would need to possessed in a public place, in a sealed carry case, and all usage would need to on private ground, and not shot out into the public space. So ultimately the parents have responsibilty.
Things would change, but not drastically.
Lets just hope the kid gets better. Ill take a deeper look into the relevent legislation and update you all.

Sorry DARK but I don't know where you got this idea from. In fact Paintball Markers ARE classified as AirGuns under the terms of the Firearms Acts 1968-1997

As such they are governed by all the legislation pertaining to Air or CO2 powered Firearms running at less than 12ft/lbs pressure

EDITED TO ADD
This is the real Hotpoint writing here now by the way :)

I agree with most of points put by all of you but as for the the Super Splats not bieng able to do any damage I think one of them could easily take someones eye out as jules had one in planet a couple of weeks ago and he evensaid the balls dont evenbreak when you fire them at the target.

Could they be made by Diablo????

8.99 The price of some ones eyesight. The toy company has a lot to answer for thinkink kids would ony shoot it at the target!!!!

AIRGUNS

Yup i am wrong, i was reading the orignal firearms act, muppet, its still wrong. The amendment act was in 1997, i didnt read that bit and it says, just to clear this up with myself,
'That specifically dangerous air weapons include any air rifle, air gun or air pistol which is capable of discharging a missile, on being dischargedfrom the muzzle of the weapon, kinetic energy in excess of 12 ft lb for an air weapon other than an air pistol. (An air pistil is 6 ft lb)'.
There you go I knew i didnt know what i was talking about, just ignore what i say, unless i quote something. Oh and a marker is qualified as an air rifle, not pistol.
This is only the case if the weapon is declared specifically dangerous, which then become section 1 firearms, and need certification. So if regulation is an idea then this might be a good thing. Then you will need certification for possession, purchase and acquisition.
wow, i impress even myself sometimes.:D Further info on the subject at

Rite just to try & set a few things straight.
the child is 12,a infant so who's responsible???- THE MOTHER&FATHER/GUARDIAN.
If the child had played & bought the gun at a site they needed a parents/guardian to sign a disclaimer form to play (unless the site didnt do this which the insurance is clearly VOID).& the site is partly responsible 20%? for selling the gun to a infant without the adult/s there to agree to them having it.
ALL low end guns have the stuff like "Danger this gun is not a toy,use apaintball approved mask at all times, risk of injury-loss of sight or even loss of life if care is not taken etc etched/label on the gun,box in structions of nearly everything that has to do with paintball.
Paintball is NOT RESPONSIBLE for this rap,Every day objects r dangrous to life-the army crew r tought to kill/injure with a pencil!i cud with a piece of paper if i wanted to-well F*** lets ban paper!.
Another point is with cars (a big killer in the wrong hands)wot happens if a under aged kid or any1 infact joy rides(or not) a car & kills/injures sum 1! well the car, dealer&makers aint responsible for it,the person is!or when u get caught speeding the car doesnt get fined &points U do-people try that"it wasnt me,i wasnt speeding it was the car"well u were driving it u where in control of it,its ur responsibilty!fine ya ass & collect 3 points min thank u!!.

At the end of the day its the GODAM PEOPLE WHO LOOK AFTER THE CHILDS&CHILDS FAULT,in the eyes of the TRUE LAW its the PARENTS FAULT.Now as the newspapers are full of w@nking t0ssoting fag wits they like to twist, bend, lie, break things to make things sound better for them(instead of sticking to the FACTS &
if they DONT KNOW-FIND OUT CORRECTLY INSTEAD OF WRITING COMPLETE SH1T-classic example when sum1 wheather its a royal, celeb they will try their best to kick um down, say they dont like that person etc but when they die or owt like that its a quick U turn that any politician wud be proud of!!!!.

Some people at work tried to diss p8ntball a while ago (as they know im a baller)when sum 1 died when he got shot by a
paintball-(paper puts it-in the mail)
,when u read it it sez that the person died cos he got shot on the neck-but wot the very small bit of writing sed from a postmortum(which i pointed out to the dumb ass mother F***ers->)
The the person wasnt well before & had a slag do the nite b4 the p8ntball outing so when he got shot he got a small alleric reation from the bruise & he did sumfing else which he sudnt have plus he DIDNT see his doctor for 2weeks which wud have saved his life-But the paintball ddidnt cause his death, not helped him maybe but didnt kill him.
In the end its a sport in the rite hands its safe but **** does happen.

Thats life **** happens,Maybe now the parents & children
will notice why things r there in writing & not to be ignored nxt time -a very costly lesson for them both more so for the kid who may lose the eye.

I don't want to, but I can't help myself. Why is everyone so concerned with the dummies? Personally, I like when they ignore all warnings and do something totally against common sense and become injured. Scars and missing appendages help me to identify idiots and avoid having to deal with them entirely. I don't feel badly for the boy. At 12, he should have known better. Now he's learned his lesson. Maybe it was a little steep on the punishment end, but he set the price not me. I don't need the warnings. If you do, maybe an over-punishing lesson is in your future. When you start clamoring for registration and rules and regulations, you are telling your government that you are too dumb to control yourselves, so an organization should be set up to run another aspect of your life. Surely there are applicable laws already. If you know of a store selling to underage patrons, have it investigated and punished and/or shut down. I have to present ID to buy paintballs in Wal-mart. Any clerk that doesn't ask gets a lecture and their boss gets talked to. See, existing laws can do the job. At least that is the case here in Texas. I do not know what the law is there. Warnings are for people too stupid to use the product safely anyway and are certain to be ignored. The more personal actions are legislated, the dumber our society will become. If we stop taking away ways for dummies to hurt and kill themselves, we will become more infested with dummies than we already are. Hell, there are plenty of kids with plenty of eyeballs, losing one here or there just doesn't mean much to me. You get what you get because YOU got it.
