Pete makes a great post. The problem with dishing out violence is that, unless it is a (semi) regular thing in your life, you never know how you will react when confronted with potential violence. You could fly off the handle and go berzerk, you could start shivering so uncontrolably that you are no use to anybody and everything in between.

The best way to be prepared for something like this is to be an at least somewhat trained fighter. Whether it's boxing, karate or whatever doesn't matter. What matters is that you have been in situations where there will be violence, you know what to expect when you get hit and you are more or less comfortable in that situation. Therefore you are able to keep thinking, which is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge bonus.
People are usually scared in a fight because of the unknown it represents. It's outside your comfort zone. Remove that and you stand a very good chance of whooping old school ass.

And if you can do the above, you stand a very good chance against the avarage junkie and chav. They usually rely on intimidation and the fear they project to do the "talking". They threaten violence, but are rarely good at it. If they run into somebody who is "comfortable" in that situation, 50% of the time they give up, 40% of the time they are sh*t out of luck and the remaining 10% is anybody's guess, but it usually makes the papers. ;)

PS I prefer a baseball bat. Don't be stupid and wield it like a real club. Chances are you'll be fighting in the hallway and you just won't have the room to swing it properly. And even if you do have the room to swing, if you miss you are wide open and therefore you are f*cked. Hold it with one hand at the bottom end and one hand some 4 to 6 inches from the top. Great for blocking any incoming blows and stabs and believe me*, if you jab a clown in the face with the business end, spectacular caving in of facial features may ensue.

*Really, believe me.

buddha and robbo are quite right
if you are not used to violence then you may not know what to do in that situation
i know this as my brother was once attacked by 3 chavs in the town where we live
he is ex forces, both iraq wars,a couple of tours of n ireland and three yrs in columbia training the army out there
so this guy as been round the block abit
he got jumped by these guys unlucky for them ,he put one through a shop window
broke one guys jaw in three places and broke the other guys arm
3 hours later he was arrested
luckily it was all on cctv
which showed that it was self defence
if that would have been the normal joe public they would have got a kicking

Going back a bit to chuckwoods post about instinctive defence. Instictive defence is a form of defence that requires no prior preperation i.e. nothing has to be drawn or turned on. So a marker or any other firearm cannot be used in instictive defense nor can a sword or blade drawn from a scabbard or sheath.
