To redeem myself from my previous piss poor thread.

I was just having a talk with me mother, she is a classroom assisstant at a primary school and specializes in helping kids with disablities (i know there is a job title but it doesnt pop to mind).

She has spent 2 years looking after a boy with pretty severe autism and he has finally got a place at a school specialized for his needs.

Should kids be put in schools like these. I mean in my opinion theres two things you should gain from school, an education and how to interact with people around you, with the latter being the more important.

My question is should these kids be in these schools?

When theyre only going to be interacting with their teachers and other disabled kids

(i do understand that there are kids that conditions are too severe to be in normal schools)

Yes they should. Where else is there for them? If they stay at home they will interact with even fewer people. And the more severe the case, the less they will want to interact with others.

People assume that education is lessons, writing, maths, etc... but it ranges hugely for autistic kids. You'll never educate an autistic kid if they aren't interested in what you're offering, they're hugely self involved (autism, from Greek Auto, meaning "Self") So education tends to stem from what they are interested in and playing to their strengths.

You can't cure autism, but you can try to involve them as much as possible, and as much as they want. You can try to manage their behaviour, but if they don't want to interact, you just do your best to teach them to be civil to each other, and everyone else.

yes.

there is a kid that gose to my trampoline club, he is 11 i think, either way he is going into year 7 in september.
im not 100% on what he actually has, but he has sevear learning and behaviour problems.
his nana dose the same job as ur mom, and has been trying to get him into one of these schools, but he has not been given a place, they said his symptoms arnt sevear enough.

i recently went to a competition with him and my coach, it was a weekend thing and involved about 8 hrs worth of driving. just on the trip their, he had to be told off, given pills, and calmed down by his nana no less than 10 times! that was within about 3 hrs. we stoped off at a burger king for something to eat, and he was trying to read a sign, but he struggled with words like "grab" and "come" spelling them out and asking his nana what they ment.

now he is going to a state school, and im sure we can all remember how harsh kids can be if you do something stupid, or smart for that matter... this kid WILL be eaten alive. he will be bullyed, he will be teased and his condition WILL NOT be reconised and treated properly.

so in my opinion, yes. every child with disabilitys should atleast be offerd a place, not forced, but offerd.

I would assume that he would be going into a behaviour support provision within the school he will be moving to.

The problem my mum has found is that the parents are what is holding the kids back from going to specialist schools because they cant seem to accept the help.

also Cook$ im gonna ask my mum if she would sponsor you(im sure she will) and im gonna add in a bit of cash aswell

The parents need to think what is in the best interests of the kid. If he won't cope in a mainstream education environment, then he shouldn't be sent there, it's more stress for everyone involved, including other pupils, parents, staff, and obviously the kid himself. The parents may have their reservations about sending the kid to a special school, but what other realistic, sensible options do they have? It may seem that the staff at the special school are just babysitting, but the kid will learn valuable lessons about behaviour and interaction. It just takes longer.

Oh, and thanks for the sponsorship! Much appreciated;)

i assume he will be, however i know the school he is going to (i went there, my sister gose there) and i know for a fact the "provission" there is... well, best described as "you can spend you brake here if you want" "you can do your work alone here, so the other kids wont bother you"
its terrible as far as actually providing support gose. as are almost all the schools in this area, exept ofcourse the one he has been told he cant go too...

Yes.

I have a foster brother who goes to one of these schools who has been diagnosed with ADHD and autism and I doubt there's anywhere better for him.

In any other school, he'd not only find it difficult to learn a thing, but would stop anyone else to learn anything because of all the disruptions he causes. At the school he is at now, there is a ratio of teachers to pupils of about 2/3 to 1 which he'd struggle without.

Should they be in schools? yes home tuition is just a form of isolation and the governments allowence for this i believe is only 3-5 hours schooling per week. You can not expect anyone to learn anything on that, let alone gain any types of social skills.

As for special schools, its a lottery of where you live. The local council will have no doubt done a statement of educational needs to evaluate the childs severity it takes months and lots of visits to doctors and shrinks etc regardless of the condition. However even if the report says the child will be unable to strive in a mainstream school, if the funding isn't there to send them elsewhere...... the child goes into mainstream even if its not the best option.

Most mainstream schools now to have learning centers aimed at kids with disabilitys of various types and are more able to manage than when I was running around school corridors. But the system is far from perfect.
