Tom, what makes you think that you need sponsors to make a tourny work? What makes you think you need spectators to make a tourny work?

If the answer is a tournament set up that sits somewhere in between the supair paint fest and the punter site woodsball, then what makes you think any of your problems are actually problems. The teams that would play these events dont care about recognition, the events will be cheap enough (i hope) that sponsorship is just a bonus and this will help foster an environment where those that want to turn up and play for fun and/or want to progress will be able to make that choice.

The temple used to run a woodsball tourny series along side the supair and it was just as successful and allowed new teams (of which we had a few) to progress and make the journy over to supair as and when they felt like it. Others just chose to dip into each, but stick predominantly with the woods.

How many southern teams had their basis in the Dormansland Skirmish mixed ball series where we got to play supair and woods??

And if it saves site owners a fortune then what is so bad about that?
What on earth would a feeder/newbie event need to cater to spectators for??
you're obviously happy where you are.:)

The initial post by Robbo in this thread seeks ways to "improve the sport", it's improvement we're looking for not more of the same.

Tournament paintball has floated along since woodsball going nowhere, and the idea of sup-air is good but it's run by the site owners, and therefore has no momentum. No offence intended to any site owner, but it's widely known that rec-ball makes more money.

I think there are also another set of site owners who (whilst making money) also run supair away from their woodland sites/operations and view the two as separate incomes.

I think the point that i was agreeing with goes back to the idea of running some sort of modified feeder league/series. This wood be perfect for running in the woods. This would allow more sites to run similar events and/or put teams together for them. It would also put a bridge in place to help get punters who want a bit more into the tourny scene. This is where UK ball is letting itself down (along with other problems). It also caters for the people who just want to roll up and play against their mates (as i have mentioned before). These players clog up the more serious end of the supair tourny scene and are actually partly to blame for the collapse of this part of the game. This is due to them becoming sick of getting shot to bits by kids with blazing guns. Instead of finding some other way of playing an organised competitive day, they simply leave the sport.

There is a very succesful site near me that runs a sup-air field in addition to his rec-ball site, you may have heard of it "Hambuger Hill" in the Bristol area.
Maybe a better introduction to sup-air type play for rec-ballers wood be more speedball fields within the rec-ball site, i always loved the barrels and pallets.
Sup-air is starting to get sensible with the introduction of 12bps, so hopefully the "get the sh*t shot of you" feeling will be a thing of the past.
Personally i would have gone for 10bps to promote more movement within the game, but of course i don't sell paint.;)

Is it possible that one of the biggest jumps from punter ball to tournament play is the change from site based bunker tap/surrender rules to the very real possibility of being drilled from about 2 foot away by some whizz kid on a run through ?

I'm not suggesting we go for treehugging bunker taps , but I have a hunch that the change in rules of engagement puts quite a few punters off from tournament. this is based purely on conversations I've had with colleges /friends who have done the whole stag-do/birthday side of paintball - when I explain what happened during a day of paintball to them I do get some funny looks.

I agree with a series of tournaments to help people convert from the punter to the tournament player. Its something that is in all our interests - a limited paint tournament might not bring as much paint revenue as a conventional one , but if you have the latest agg accessories for sale , you'll sell them like hot cakes.

My local site runs some really good fun "hybrid" tournaments , which for me where a good feeder to bigger things with a mix of woodsball with some inflatables thrown in for good measure. In an ideal world they'd have space for a full on five man sup'air field too !
