Good grief, so many of you complain about the current school system, I can see why. Many of you are totally ignorant when it comes to history.
So, let's get some facts straight. Yes, the British Empire used to be an empire on which the sun never set, but that's only because God does not trust you in the dark.
Seriously, the reason your empire crumbled is not because of some money hungry politician. If anything, they lost a lot of money. The fact is that imperialism at some point became quite passé, mostly because the people being ruled from afar kinda figured out that there were a lot more of them than there were of the people ruling them. You didn't grant independance to most of these countries from the kindness of your sould, rather you got kicked out, just as the Dutch were kicked out of Indonesia.
As far as Thatcher doing a good job of her one war, guess again. She didn't. Government meddling with the way the war should be handled resulted in a far higher casualty rate than what it would have been if the campaign had been run by military logics. Thatcher and co wanted some quick results, which resulted in a number of forced marches and a badly prepared assault. Only the discipline and training of your Royal Marines meant that they were able to win the day, despite some heavy casualties.
Had that maneuvre been conducted on a strictly military basis, the Falklands war would have lasted a few weeks longer, but many British lives would have been saved.
As far as bringing back heavier punishments doing the trick in reducing crime, get real. Look at the US, look at Russia. Both countries that have very severe penalties for pretty much every crime, but it's done them very little good.
A good start would be to actually enforce the rules that they laid down for society, kinda like paintball really. (look how I brought the thread somewhat back on track)
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
@ Coldy: Thanks.
