Thanks for the welcome Robbo. As for the yank comment, I thought I should let you know that the “advice” I gave was not something I came up with. It was from either Aristotle or Socrates, can’t remember which, either way, they were both European.

The long-winded discussion about last-few-second extra penalties is not a thread-jack IMO. What I wanted to say a few pages back was that the fiasco in OC would most likely not have happened if there had been tougher rules against playing on--especially in the last seconds when there is such an incentive to play on whenever the win is direly needed/wanted.

Sure, a lot of work needs to be done with the rules and with the quality of reffing. As Baca, Missy Q and many here have pointed out many times, consistency is what is sorely needed. All the rulebooks I've seen so far need to be checked and brought into line with reality. Most need a large dose of linguistic skills. Once that's sorted some strong leadership needs to be deployed to build up respect for the rules and the officials. As Buddha pointed out, we need refs to earn the same kinda respect American football refs have. Ditto rugby refs.

So the main thing we see here IMO is that there is obviously way too much playing on in our sport and it needs to be dealt with. Playing on cuts at the very core of what this game should really be all about. The rewards for cheating far outweigh the liabilities and that must be changed. It amazes me that there haven't been more such big-finals fiascos. If the rules don't get tougher and reffing better we can only expect more such embarrassing episodes.

One way to immediately improve this would be to add a 60 second rule in NPPL.

Most of the top league people understand the need and desire for a much improved reffing program. But they also realize that there isn't much grass-roots motivation to actually lay out the financial resources needed for turning this around.

Without sufficient allocation of resources along with smart, strong leadership in this area, NPPL (and other leagues) will continue to have the same problems.

Imagine tournament paintball that rewards actual playing skills rather than cheating skills. Imagine teams being able to use their training time honing all the positive abilities rather than wasting so much time like they do today on learning how to play on and cheat in so many different ways and how to get away with it.

It won't realy do much in the NPPL.

In the NXL, the crazy last minute stuff, usually happens when the game is tied with very little time left on the game clock.

That is rarely the case in 7-man.... the situation we saw, could just as easily have happened with 5 minutes left to play (I don't even know if it WAS within the last minute - I don't think so?).

The psycology of the situation is also very different, from an X-Ball match starting with around a minute left on the clock - and a 7-man match that has been going on for almost 6 minutes!

Last, but not least... when the game is on the line, players WILL cheat, if it can win them the game.

The only way to fix it, no matter what the rules are, is to have good refs... and that is where many leagues are failing.

Players don't care about a cool stadium, a nice pitch, or other stuff - if the reffing sucks - the events sucks.

Reffing should ALWAYS be at the forefront of promoters minds, and be the one area where they put the most money and effort.
