Nick, I tend to agree with Chi here. As you may or may not know, this whole paintball "athlete" thing has bothered me for a very long time.
I think you may see things different from the rest of the world because you come from a region where people tend to take their balling very seriously. For some reason it seems that all Scandinavians seem to take whatever sports they do very seriously, and I am quite envious of that. Unfortunately it's not indicative of the attitudes that permeate the rest of the world.
Or just the uk :p

Surely the simple measure is those teams that play every leg of the series? (four from five at a push)

Because if you're serious you play every leg, if you don't you can't be. I don't think 80% of the total teams that play Millenniums (remember to include M5 too) do that or close to it.

The rest normally go for their "home" event and then one (maybe two) other that's easy to get to and offers them the big time feel. I know in my first season I just played the UK and Toulouse - simply because Toulouse was the "event". Reffing won't be the reason teams come to an event, but it might be a big factor in getting them to come again

obviously it is a sliding scale - the lower the division, there higher the percentage of unserious teams.´

I think if you look at CPL and Div. 1 i this years MS, 95 % or more are "serious" teams.

In Division 2 it is probably more like 60 %

Hmm - my math may have been a bit off - call it 65 % of the teams at an event are "serious".

Question then becomes who promoters should cater for?

But surely for those teams the decision to come again relies heavily on the fun factor? Which depends on many things, of which reffing will be a part, but is unlikely to be a major one, as they don't play in a way that makes it hard on the refs and they all think that French refs suck anyway, yet continue to bumrush Toulouse.
I think things like the trade village, the atmosphere, nekkid hoes and such are more of a deciding factor.

And peeps wonder why Paintball can't crack the bigtime. If our biggest events and top promoters are conflicted about what the game is or isn't and just who they are catering to how can anyone seriously expect anybody outside of the game to take it seriously?
