One thing is the recognition that there are people who don't have the slightest moral or ethical restraint regarding wiping a hit off, playing on, using gun cheats for greater ROF, using gun cheats for greater velocity, maliciously bonus-balling, game-fixing, etc. etc.. Another thing is the question of whether it is right or wrong...which we could never get to the bottom of here because that has so much to do with one's personal worldview.
But another related question is whether all the cheating is paintball or not. Or, more to the point, the paintball we want to go public with.
The major public sports have cheating relatively under control IMO. Very seldom do we see cheating change the fair outcome.
In paintball for years it has been that your team is not going to put you on the field unless they know they can "count on you in a pinch" to "do the right thing for the team". It sucks but it is true that if you aren't predisposed to cheat at the "right time" you will have to be a lot better than the lesser player competing for your spot. (Kinda obvious, isn't it?)
Unfortunately I don't think we can change the morality of paintball players, coaches and managers but we can improve the rules and improve the reffing.
The NXL is an example of better reffing--because they start with good people and give them the most intense experience, game after game, tournament after tournament--and because of rules that make players think twice about taking the risk.
For 2003, NXL's first season, the average number of penalties for each team for the entire season was 41 with a range from 32 to 69 (the old Miami Effect).
For 2005 the average number of penalties for the regular season was 29.5 with a spread from 20 to 39.
So obviously the superior reffing and more consequential rules makes a big difference toward "containment". Most people that watch and play NXL suggest that cheating is seen far less there than elsewhere in paintball. The more we contain the cheating the more real paintball playing skills will be showcased.
Traditional 5-man and 7-man don't have it contained and won't until the rules are changed to make playing on, wiping, gun-cheating and so forth not worth the risks. Right now it pays to cheat in those formats and all the serious players know it.
