Its cheating, and almost everyone does it!!

The punishment is not great enough to stop you. If your team got a punishment that ment something, like say they had to forfit the next match or loose 50 points, that would stop almost everyone over night, and the few who did continue would soon be kicked of the team for costing the team valuable points.

When a player fouls someone in football, the free kick is supposed to be a big advantage to the fouled team, and a major disadvantage to the cheating team, do it and you run the risk of being sent off and missing the next game.........

Could this be the answer??? If your team gets caught wiping, you get penelty points and the next game you go on with one less player??? If its the last match, you could have more penelty points????

Disagree. That's like saying that if I commit an infraction while playing against Man U, I'll start losing 0-1 against Chelsea. Makes no sense :)

On the other hand, I believe that the 3-4-1 penalty is, in fact, too harsh and many refs don't call it unless they can somehow prove (at least themselves) that the guy wiped. If you made it less severe (1-4-1) refs would start pulling people when they thought they are wiping, leading to some bad calls but more wipers being punished.

Think of the rubbing yourself on the bunker - it can happen because you're trying to get a better position or because you're wiping, most of the refs will not give you a 3-4-1 unless they're pretty sure that you are hit and you were aware of it (the rule talks about intentional removal of paint), most of the time you'll be removed from the game and nothing else will happen. Get rid of the "intentional" part, award 1-4-1s to people for rubbing hits on bunkers even when they don't notice they're hit  and for sliding / diving with a hit on your knees...

Same can be said for the wipers. Theyre walking off the field smiling because theyve just wiped, won and not got caught.

This could go forever (it already has) as no argument will win this.

There are already penalties if you get caught. 3 for 1's at Milleniums, 5 minute in the box for x-ball, sosta and a player less at the PA etc etc. But people will still wipe...

One thing is the recognition that there are people who don't have the slightest moral or ethical restraint regarding wiping a hit off, playing on, using gun cheats for greater ROF, using gun cheats for greater velocity, maliciously bonus-balling, game-fixing, etc. etc.. Another thing is the question of whether it is right or wrong...which we could never get to the bottom of here because that has so much to do with one's personal worldview.

But another related question is whether all the cheating is paintball or not. Or, more to the point, the paintball we want to go public with.

The major public sports have cheating relatively under control IMO. Very seldom do we see cheating change the fair outcome.

In paintball for years it has been that your team is not going to put you on the field unless they know they can "count on you in a pinch" to "do the right thing for the team". It sucks but it is true that if you aren't predisposed to cheat at the "right time" you will have to be a lot better than the lesser player competing for your spot. (Kinda obvious, isn't it?)

Unfortunately I don't think we can change the morality of paintball players, coaches and managers but we can improve the rules and improve the reffing.

The NXL is an example of better reffing--because they start with good people and give them the most intense experience, game after game, tournament after tournament--and because of rules that make players think twice about taking the risk.

For 2003, NXL's first season, the average number of penalties for each team for the entire season was 41 with a range from 32 to 69 (the old Miami Effect).

For 2005 the average number of penalties for the regular season was 29.5 with a spread from 20 to 39.

So obviously the superior reffing and more consequential rules makes a big difference toward "containment". Most people that watch and play NXL suggest that cheating is seen far less there than elsewhere in paintball. The more we contain the cheating the more real paintball playing skills will be showcased.

Traditional 5-man and 7-man don't have it contained and won't until the rules are changed to make playing on, wiping, gun-cheating and so forth not worth the risks. Right now it pays to cheat in those formats and all the serious players know it.

The PA have been using something like this all year, the Sosta rule, it you cheat against a team and get caught, you get banned from the next game against that team (ie the next leg). only works in a fixed league structure tho.

If in Rugby or football you were to have a team stamping, or diving, then the other team is going to adopt their tactics.

Surly therefore if neither teams cheated neither would be at a dissadvantage.

As a game of cheat on cheat is really no better than a game of honest baller on honest baller, if no one cheats it would all be good, however there will always be people that cheat, so there will always be people that cheat to keep up with the cheats, makes u sick as an honest non-wiping player doesnt it!

My 2ps worth...

We need to turn things around with the rules and the reffing so that instead of "you're stupid if you don't cheat," it becomes "you're stupid if you cheat" or at least "you're stupid to cheat on this field because you will most likely pay for it" and that's only going to come from external motivations.
