I completely agree that better judging is the only realistic solution but this will cost time and money.
As a result I think its going to be some time before we see players really changing their attitudes through fear of being penalised because they know the judges aint up to scratch, or worse (biased) and can exploit this to win.

Just my 2 cents you understand;)

Better refs? Well, can we find them and if so why haven't we by now if this is what everyone wants? This is the same issue raised over and over again, with the same "answers" being droned on endlessly. Tis so formulaic--you win, you're the only people not complaining about the reffing, otherwise they suck as usual or even worse than the last time. Could we have some way of quantifying exactly how bad reffing is for comparison, or at least start making a list of reffing crews that are generally agreed upon to suck the least? Perhaps by doing that the reffing crews can be voted on by all the teams participating before each event. Anyone like that idea?

MORE refs per field in the meantime is a much less ambiguous, more attainable step in the right direction.

Mother, is that you?
Nick. Look, take your kaftan off, put out that joint and remove the Jefferson Airplane album from your stereogram.:)

Cheating occurs in all sports and at all levels, and it is directly proportional to the control/influence of the refs or what have you.

There is no other sporting code that says 'c'mon chaps... play the game'.

I'm quite happy to argue on the grey areas, but this is a basic fact.... surely. :)

We just need better ref coverage to catch it in motion...every other sport has one player handling the action at a time, and only a few possibilities of going against the rules at a time. One ref for every two players to cover the action as it happens would cut down on the problem tremendously. Otherwise, isn't this just kinda barking at the moon?

Good that you have concrete suggestions.

While we're trying to get a pro judging corp going let's get Millennium and NPPL organized to improve the reffing as it is organized now. Let's require that all judges attend a training course and that reffing becomes standardized even more. Let's make sure that all judges are sufficiently trained and informed, and there's enough of them, to keep control of the quick situations. The talent is there. We just need to channel it.

The number can be discussed for the different formats. I think 10-12 would be enough for 7-player if the judges are properly trained, motivated, organized and supervised. All judges should attend the captains' meeting and hear that the rules are going to be enforced fairly and consistently, especially concerning playing on, arguing with a ref, talking after being eliminated, staying in your bunker after you can see and feel you've been hit, etc.

We could also make a "3 strikes you're out" penaltly for repeating the same offense, especially playing on, 3 times during a tournament. The player gets pulled from the tournament. Then maybe players will learn to quit shooting after they know they're hit.:D

Foreign teams will win in the US when they stop complaining about bad reffing and start playing better paintball. Bad calls happen to everyone. You cannot look at a forum without seeing people complaining about reffing. Why is it that I never see a post about what a certain team could have done differently to win. Complaining about reffing is just loser talk. I'm am not saying it is just a foreign thing because I hear American cry babies complaining about the reffing all the time.

At the IAO my team took 5th after having a near perfect prelims. Did we lose because of bad reffing. No, we lost because we choked and played the field wrong. I thought the reffing was very good through out the tournament, but I still heard other losing teams talking about how the reffs screwed them. I have no sympathy for them. I'm sure they could have won had their team played better paintball.

Reffing X Ball

To help with this thread I thought I would reply. I was one of the reffs that reffed X Ball I was the one in the tower. The Americans did get more penalties then any other team. I keep hearing that we may have been Bias and that bothers me because that is far from the truth and Robbo thanks for the Kind words and it was nice to meet you. Let me explain to you about what we saw and did. The Russians and France played a very clean game and the next game against USA the Russians tryed to play dirty the first Quarter. I think they thought lets beat the Americans to their own game. Well it cost them because we put them in the penalty
box just like everyone else. Once they stopped pushing the limits of the Rules they played 5 on 5 against the Americans and the Americans started to lose. But because of the Americans lead from the first quarter they did not catch up. Let me tell you my team was their to reff and not to make the USA win. The Russians in my oppion could have given the US team a run for their Money but they thought they would get screwed by bias reffing and decided to play on in the first Quarter and they had not played like that until they played the USA Team.

We reffed for 13 hours a Day and I am sure we may have missed one or two calls but we are only Human. We did this for X-Ball and our Sport of Paintball. I think this is what we need for the future of our Sport. We knew as a team that we made History and the one thing we did not want to do is screw it up and reff bad or bias. Oh by the way we hate reffing. I think we did the best job we could and I am sorry that some may think we screwed up. I hope we can come up with a solution with our nations being able to trust each other. I have heard about the past but maybe it is time to change and Unite as Paintball Players and I feel My team has helped start that by providing unbias reffing.

Thanks Rick Hartman

A solution that occured to me while reading this thread would be to outfit the players with helmut cams, ala FEAR FACTOR and other extreem stunt shows. The video feed seems able to take the abuse
and is of good quality, as well it could be reviewed in the event of any contraversy. Too
many reffs on the field creates problems as well,
differing views, opinions on penalties or just plain getting in the way. Nothing pooches a game
like two reffs and a couple of players all arguing
a call while the game is still on.

Hear ****in hear.

And it's great to get it from the horse's mouth re Rick's post. 20 years the losers have been complaining about the reffing, and the cheating, and the weather, and the paint, and the... do you see where I'm going with this. And these boards fuel it.
