It sounds like we'd like to do a few joint training sessions and some friendlys at some point this year, but what do we want to do next season? Below is a range of options we can consider, and please post if you think of any more ideas.

Option A We could just have a load of friendlys through out the year finishing off with another tourney similar to the one we've just had.

Option B – A organised league spread over 3 or 4 events. Playing an M7 match format, where each team plays 2 big matches against 2 other teams per event, eventually playing a match against all the other teams over the course of the season.

Option C – A league with each event similar to the one just gone, where at each event everyone plays individual little games against all the other teams.

If we have a league we would still be able to run a Championship/Cup at the end of the season (similar to this year). And that way new clubs and those who couldn't play the league would be able to join in too.

For those who aren't familiar with the M7 match format: It is 5-a-side. You play repeated games against the same team, with 3 min breaks between each game. Each time a team wins a game (buy getting the flag to their oponent's end of the field) they get one point. The first team to score 5 points wins. The maximum playing time is 15 min, but the clock stops during the 3 min breaks so the total match time can be up to approx. 45 mins. If the 15 mins runs out before either team scores 5 points then the team with the most points wins.

Personally I think the best idea would be option B (a match-format league) plus a championship/cup like this year's at the end of the season.

With a match format the short breaks mean you don’t cool down between games and stay pumped with adrenaline. It also makes fitness and stamina more of a factor. Playing against the same team again and again mean that you have to be more adaptive, and also promotes more aggressive, interesting playing. Normally teams will have more than 5 players so that you can put out different players, if they some are getting tired or they want to vary their tactics with more offensive or more defensive squads. They also sometimes have pit-crews to help them get ready for the games in the 3 min breaks.

Admittedly it would be quite a rush in the 3 min breaks, especially for the less experienced teams, but i doubt it would take long to get used to it. Also it would make it easier to lend kit, as you wouldn't have to keep passin it from team to team. Another advantage would be that in between matches teams would be free to watch the others, as they wouldn't always be preparing for games. And if a team's afternoon match was one of the earlier ones they'd be a able to have few beer while watching the other teams play. Or if the had a long drive home, and weren't staying for the piss-up then they could make an early start home.

I'm working on costs at the moment, but I'm estimating that we could organise a 4 event season for an entry fee of around £250 - £300 per team for the whole season (so about £60 - £75 per event).

Over all it is an even more exciting way to play, that really pushes you to develop your skills and fitness, and is much more interesting to watch. Frankly, if it goes ahead I'd be gutted that i wouldn't be able to play. (I'm graduating)

So...
What do you all think? What do you want to do next season?

There are 13 recognised and active clubs that i'm aware of:

Aberdeen
Birmingham
Coventry
East Anglia
Hull
Imperial
Kent
Portsmouth
Southampton
Teesside
Warwick
West England
York

Surrey should be restarting next year, when there chair returns from a placement year. I heard noises that Keele were looking at starting a club, but not heard anything about that recently. But with a site with sup'air less than 2 miles from their uni, run by Keel grads, they're bound to sort one out soon. It'd be a crime if they don't!

The inter-uni forums are one their way.

I think that the league format sound good but as you said it would still be good to have an end of season cup.

Also this may put more pressure on the powers that be (BUSA and others) to recognise paintball as a sport which would hopefully lead to more players and better funding.

I dont supose that any one has any photos of us bin men do they?

Yes, there should definately be an end of season cup/championship. Teams that have never played before would be unlikely to enter a league, as it is a bigger commitment. A one off annual cup would be more accessable and would give new teams the chance to try tourny ball - like this year.

I'm glad to hear you had a good time and have caught the bug. Out of interest which team were you with?
