I will ignore the profit per head issue of Rental versus Rec-baller,and look at the conversion rate instead.

I have my site operator head on so here are a few figures. Lets say in a good month we had 5-600 rental players through the doors. All these players watch Sunday drivers on the video while they get changed, there are around 30 copies of PGI, Facefull and PBUK for them to read whilst they wait for their
mates to turn up.

So these potential rec ballers are already exposed to other versions of paintball before they even get their hands on a cammo suit. Out of all those players perhaps 10 may ask about paintball outside of the rental market. We run a Walk on once a month which is explained to them, advertised on our web site and posted up on this and the Walk On Zone forum.

The walk on days normally run along side the rental days with no problems at all. Paint is available at £25 a box from us and the green fee is £15 which includes lunch.

So how many rec ballers do we get from outside, plus rental conversions per month? Answer - 20 to 40. Out of that number 5 have gone forward to pursue the tourny scene ( the League ) one player out of the 40 I would consider as good feeder material for the future. (Good luck in Bristol Nicky Boy)
I could not make the days any cheaper and yet still they do not come!

There are also three other sites that offer walk on days within an hours drive
so availability is not an issue.

I have to agree with Duffy on the culture issue, mix that with a sedantry life style of the youth and you end up with what you got at the moment.

Ponder this Pete, When you played 15 years ago how much did you spend a man at a UK Tourny £60? how much does a Rec Baller at Paintball Extreme spend?. £40 - £60 How much does a Rental customer spend? £45. Why bother spending all that extra money on kit when you can use a sites?

So the pricing has little to do with it. Most Rental customers go once or twice a year period. If I was to charge £25 a box to rental customers they would spend the same amount of money per head because if someone is prepared to spend £50 on a day out thats what he/she will spend. The same customer would just end up shooting more paintballs for their money.

From my site operator perspective, all I would achieve is treble the wear and tear on the equipment and the site. Why replace my kit three times faster than before and wreck the woods and Sup air that much quicker too.

Sorry to jump in, but personally, it was probably closer to £80 with paint coming in boxes of 2500 and that was at young gun level. Question is, when rec/walkons are paying £40 for a days play why would they want to make the jump up and spend more? It's a question I've put to my lot and they are all willing to step up and test themselves against the rest in the new year when the new season starts, a lot of people we talk to at the site we train at are unwilling to spend any more on the game.

Can i just say this i have not red the whole content of this yet just robbo's and a few more i need to go out will read later so if i have got the wrong end of the stick please forgive me.

Me and my hard working team run the Northern Quarter in Manchester. We are trying to get as many new people into the sport as possible we have 2 newbie day's a month i reckon we must have got at least 30 people into sup air and out of the wood's we spend all day with them telling them the In's and out 's of the tourney scene ( well what we know ) and this is for no gain to us just hope that they come back to the normal day's that we run on a Sunday. the time we spend with people on normal day's cleaning up for them and all the other thing's that go with running a walk on site, we do this for NO profit ( well the farmer makes a profit ).

Now here is my point we have phoned emailed, written to every paintball company there is and what response have we had to help us out with paint and so on f@ck all ( except from planet who have been there since day 1 and been amazing )but some are coming round.

So we got talking yesterday as we sat there in the cold hoping for the rain to stop so that the people could go and play,
Wouldn't be easier to just have a rec ball site and make money instead of just being here every week.

So i think mt point is that if the suppliers are not going to help out a site that are promoting our sport what chance have we got to do any thing else.

Like i said i might have missed the whole point here so if i have i am sorry.

The Northern Quarter site quite frankly is awesome
The noob days are a great way to get into paintball
and the regular training - well its been said about 10 times before but - you cant beat playing against some truely talented UK ballers

agree with what markie c says about it, you can try as hard as you want but it cant all be push push push from the little men of the world, theres gotta be some backup from the big names in terms of promotion and getting people out of the woods.

again dunno if this is relevent but worth adding i hope

Does the bulk of the industry want the bulk of players out of the woods?

Do site owners?

When it comes to that, do most existing players?

i dont think its about getting people "out of the woods" permanently, its just getting people to try new things. surely a percentage of those people will get into it. just the same as a percentage of rec players take the plunge buy a marker and progress to walk ons. thats how i and a few people i know did it anyway.

its like the NMC, its a new thing for most paintballers. its not going to remove the 7 / 5 man etc games its just another option for ballers to get into. however if its not attended or promoted it too might die a death, no matter how committed the steve bulls and andy fat bobs of this world are at attempting to intoriduce new concepts to paintball in the uk

Not necessarily, I'm just asking questions.

And I don't see why existing players need anything else to get better - there are great events, there are places to train and compete, you get gear at knocked down prices. What's not to like?
