Wasn't one of the original objectives of X-ball to simplify the scoring so spectators could follow without a rulebook and a pocket calculator?

Still does that ... the scoring in X for the match is still the same. What they are talking about here is the "behind the scenes" scoring that dictates who is going to progress on past the prelim stage.

And most punters/public won't be following that closely - so the match scoring still serves their needs.
