While on our way back from toulouse myself and a team mate had a conversation about roster locking.

The pro's being of course that it forces a team to either have a sandbagger all season or stick to the same team throughout creating effectivly the same skilled team all season.

However....is locking divisons AND rosters at the same time killing paintball?

I dont know the exact numbers but here is an example.

Say there are 9 British Teams in Div 1. You can only roster on 10 players is it? (correct figures as u go but you will get the drift)

thats 90 players from the UK that can play in Div 1.

What if there were 100 players who were Div 1 standard? Those other 10 cant get into millenium unless they play div 2. But lets be honest. If you are good enough why would you want to waste your time on it?

Those 10 players cant form a team because of the division lock. thats 10% of our talent sitting there just doing nothing. how is that any good for paintball? imagine that in all the countries

Second example

You pick your division you pick your squad. you make it through halfway through the season and BAM. suddenly your team members start dropping like flys. Maybe its personal reasons. maybe its team arguements. Either way you now struggle to get your team together. Everything is locked. Nothing you can do. We almost had to drop out due to this. Surely eventually a team will drop out because of this. I mean the hurricanes were a no show. Maybe its because of this? And to top it all you get fined if your team cant show.

I know this all seems like rambling maybe it is but i really feel that maybe Millenium need to start addressing thses problems? The IPPU was the key thing for this and im really dissapointed it failed. I mean they couldve been an independant judication for team circumstances and pass/deny team roster changes.

Also, i dont see why they cant have an open div? like they had in nxl...or psp....which ever. maybe then we'd see more teams flying in to do the events? and maybe more scratch teams from home turf. i mean why would an spl/div 1 level team wanna play m5?

I see you point and agree with it in some aspects.

It's hard to stop sandbagging / running around playing with other teams etc ...

as for the Hurricanes they could only get hold of 3 players for toulouse the others were not answering calls or emails or whatever. HOWEVER they DID ask to play with just those 3 but Ulrich disallowed them.

How can we combat this problem? Div locking isn't really a problem rosta locking can be for say div 1 down due to sponsors money etc .... you get my drift.

So should we no longer rosta lock div 1? I would vote in favour of that.

Should we no longer team lock div 1? I would vote against due to the fact that it would be pointless earning that spot.

my point exactly. hurricanes wouldve gone to that event with 3. instead 3 teams ended up playeing 2 matches instead of 3. for the same price. why? because ulrich doesnt seem to realise that jst cos the season is mid-way through people still will drop out.

i wouldve asked for my money back if i was one of those teams.

Div 2 is open... if you're not an established team or feel you might not be able to commit to a whole season you can try there.

that's not a dig, Toulouse cost a lot of money in flights etc so I can see why some people couldn't make it,
all the training, domestic and big events take it's toll on time and the wallet!

However like cookie said, what if they know their better than div 2 and don't want to waste all that cash. I know i wouldn't if i was in that position and was working out just how much the season would cost for something i'm "better than"

People will still struggle mid season especially on the clutch companies have on the purse strings this season. It's shown throughout the ranks of paintball how hard this season is financially.

Rosta locking is still hurting teams with out the major backing due to the fact they may not be established / experienced enough as a team to get the backing / support needed. Its sad but paintballs going to be like this for a long time.

Not on TV and it won't be backed by outside companies.

We play for the love of the sport until someone comes along with a shed load of money that can bang peoples heads together to create unity amongst the money craving masses we will be lost within this fickle bind.

Roster lock looks good on paper, but fails in practice
If it is there to stop teams importing US players into squad half way though the season, then nationality lock the team after the first event and allow them upto 4 national substitutes in addition to the original 10, but fine the team 100 euros for each one they use.

Better than having a team who have paid up in full in advance, having to drop out and possibly banned as well

Drop the lock altogether - at Div1 the whole "Pro-ringer" problem is much less than at CPL/SPL level and if you are playing that level (CPL/SPL), then you should be able to handle a couple of Yanks.

If ECI can beat down Dynasty (not the whole first squad, granted, but still an amazing achievement IMHO), then why should teams fear playing "better" players within teams - especially given the enormous commitment it takes to play an entire season these days.

Let's open the leagues back up a bit and get some US teams coming over to really push us again. (Current economic climate not withstanding).

Players should be locked by division, not by team.

Any pro can play any other pro team, CPL to CPL and so on. Any player who hasn't played in a major league for a full calendar season can do what they want, otherwise they can only go down one division per season.

Simple.
