Recurring Injuries?

As an osteopath I spend a lot of time dealing with amateur sportsmen and women and they can be a pain in the arse to treat (technical term). Professionals know that an injury can end a career or a season if handled wrongly so will take the time out or do the exercises or use the icepacks etc until things are ok again, wheras the player who just does it for fun is the one who will limp onto the field with one leg hanging off because he doesn't want to miss a game:rolleyes:
My advice is to treat problems when they are little ones instead of waiting for catastrophe; if you get something sorted out or a clear picture of the nature of the problem when it's still a niggle that usually works out a lot better than waiting until something goes badly wrong and then trying to get it fixed overnight.
As for treatment the sort of therapist recommended above or a good osteopath who likes sports injuries is a good starting point, if anyone wants a recommendation for someone local to them then get in touch and I'll have a look at my big list:)

Ankle

I keep getting tendonitis in my right achilles tendon. Despite playing football twice a week this only flares up after a really heavy paintball training session with lots of dives in.

Takes about a month to get rid of with heat and ice packs every nite. Never had it before started paintball.

As for footy injuries that repeat... back, hamstrings, sore ankle joints, sore knee, ... blimey.. must be getting old....

The problem is usually when you damage joints. Bones and muscles mend near enough completely, but ligaments never really recover their elasticity.

YT-69 is right you should never ignore an injury or medical advice, it's not macho it's just stupid. And if you have a recurring injury you should consult a sports injury therapist, because if it keeps coming back then it hasn't healed properly in the first place. OK in many cases it will be a case of "just live with it" but much of the time treatment or a period of rest will sort it out forever, and they can give you good advice on how to prevent it flaring up and how to reduce the recovery period when it does.

I know it's annoying having to pay out for a consultation and maybe stop play for maybe months, but surely better that than permenent damage which is what a lot of people risk by ignoring it - pain is there for a good reason, telling you there is damage!

OT - Wow Liz, welcome back, been a while since you've been about :)

On Topic - Stretched the ligaments in my right knee on a poor dive last year, got back problems since I was a teenager and the last four weeks have had pain in my wrist since I ran into a goal post at football. But nothing too bad.

I twisted a vertabrae (vertabrate? - one of the bones on your spine) last year, and been going to chiropractor since september.

Still hurts now and again, find it hard to lift a lot of stuff and always hurts when i get back from school after carrying a bag about all day!

have sprained both ankles,
got whiplash in all the muscles in my neck and upper left back from a slip.

The only paintball injury ive had was a knee impact from a superman dive on a dodgy field.

good point ollie about the pro's wanting to maintain their career and ametuers wanting to get the game, not thought about that before.
