What worries me most, is the ease which he did it at, and of course the fact that until he shot her, it wasn't actually illegal to make it, due to the fact that the power didn't change, so it was still legally an air rifle, just without the frangible ammo used in paintball guns, (I know it wasn't in England and the laws are different, but if this happened in the UK, the guy would be charged with assault or assault with an airgun, I'm not sure what he'd get for assault, but It wont be as much as he deserves.
