The PA Cup....Why?
I've had a load of calls and calls & e-mails over the last week with people asking "why are we doing this?" I'm sure most already know my philosophy what's right & wrong with the paintball scene but the condensed version goes like this...
Paintball is NEVER going to be the "new football" and anyone who thinks so is deluding themselves. In fact paintball isn’t even a recognised sport in ANY country in the world and in some parts (even in the UK) it’s illegal.
Paintball as a sport is not growing at an exponential rate. There are very few actual new teams...just the same people moving about & reforming under different names. There are also very few new players coming into the sport and sticking with it. Most of these "young" players that do keep on playing is because their father/older brother/uncle plays and is often associated with the paintball industry. Most young players simply can't afford it. And for every new player that comes in one goes out. There’s roughly only about 20% more players and teams around now than there was 5 years ago and 5 years ago there was only an estimated 1000 regular tourney players in the whole country.
Players only have a finite amount of cash & time. Training is always talked about yet what percentage of players can actually afford it?
Real sponsorship & any kind of large scale funding will only come from outside the sport. The paintball companies in the UK are not large enough or make enough money to sustain the habit of all those wannabe superstars. Hence the reason "sponsorship" & "support" was cut back so drastically this year. The level was simply unsustainable.
Paintball as a sport gets next to zero media coverage...and it will continue like this unless something changes. As things stand the media is NOT interested in paintball unless some 10-year-old gets his eye shot out or some drugged up teenagers steal a car and do a drive by paintball shooting. Wonderful images the public must have of us.
We’re not talking about television here either, we’re starting at the bottom so lets not try and run before we can walk. Don’t expect to see a regular weekly hour-long feature on Sky Sports 1. As I’ve said on many occasions, local schoolboy football gets more media coverage than paintball. If we can get teams in their local newspaper on a regular basis then we’re onto something. Media coverage may possibly raise awareness to a level where outside sponsors will look at paintball and consider it as a viable option. I only say “may”…I sure ain’t making any promises. But as I’ve explained, if your team is in the local newspaper every month the manager of the local Maccy D’s or car hire company is more likely to take an interest in what you’re doing. And if your team picture appears in the local rag once a month with “Big Mmmm Burgers” on the front of their shirts then it’s a good bet the manager of the local BK or KFC will be wondering why he’s not seeing the name of his company in the news every month.
Lots of teams approach paintball companies asking for sponsorship with that vague promise “we’ll wear your logo on our shirts”. From a potential sponsors point of view…Whoop-De-Fricking-Do. So what? Who’s going to see it? Oh yeah! Other paintballers who already buy our product? No mileage in that so what do we get out of giving you cut price gear and free paint? Errr nothing!
…..and believe me I speak from experience having been on both sides of that particular fence.
So how do we get the media to notice us? Simple really…do something the media is interested in. Represent your home town or city in a national competition. A team called the Spanking Monkeys, or some real doozy’s I picked out of an old Paintball Adventures, “The Dead Sheep” and “Bo Peep & His Sheep” are not likely to attract any serious consideration from either media or sponsors. However The Manchester Lions playing Liverpool City in a national competition straight away has potential and interest for the local rag. Media coverage means we can reach the public which means supporters. Media + Public = Sponsors
None of this will happen overnight. And I’m not promising miracles. All we can do at the PA is give you the stage on which to present your case. Every player has talked about it long enough, now it’s time to actually get of our arses and do something about it, or to quote one very prominent industry figure “Put up or shut up”. If the players don’t take this opportunity to prove themselves and show what paintball is and can be then, sorry to say it, but we’re just going to be running around the same fields in another 5 years time and, sadly, nothing will have changed….
Don’t talk about it….DO IT!
