Beg to differ Señor Loco. Although I couldn't really "watch" the last two pro Div X Ball games I felt they were very dynamic and entertaining, especially the RL v Infamous game. Almost as much so as the last Strange v Assassins game which I managed to watch from the score tower. That was about as good as it gets IMO.
Wasn't dissing the teams, Wad, but the field--as Manike mentions in post above--forced the teams into limited patterns. For those who have on occasion claimed Xball was the same break over and over and consequently not much fun to watch that is essentially what the divisional field delivered. (Even so, a close contest is always more interesting.) Not the teams fault--they planned in accordance with what was available, is all.
I was not enamored of the NXL fields either but then I'm notoriously difficult to please. :)

I see what you mean. I guess the games were fascinating to me because I was on one or the other side of that snake for five days. The games were good but could have been a whole lot better.

Baca, we need to get you designing the layouts. I've seen what you can do and somebody ought to give it a try. Maybe something in Europe next season?

Now that I think about it World Cup Div X Ball didn't feel as "busy" as the field we used at Campaign Cup. Maybe that was to RL's disadvantage with the limited game plans?

Anytime.

I do think when RL (and most everyone else) was compelled to keep two guys back center off most breaks it didn't offer free reign to their skills but I daresay the same applies to Dynasty, Avalanche and others too.

In recent years we've seen field design for 7-man help redefine the game and yet with Xball, intended to be fast and furious, it's almost like a subconcious effort is underway to slow it down and limit the permutations. The nature of the game, using guns and working angles of opportunity, will keep play on the wires--the field layouts don't have to try and force the play.

*Perhaps some magazine would find the topic an interesting one and assign somebody to write about it*

So it's prob best to....slow it down and limit the permutations.
Even if one imagines that was a consideration--and we thought that with regards to the NXL field chosen--where does it stop?
As a sport Paintball is better off working at being the best it can be, not some homongenized, this will make people happy, bend over backwards for TV spectacle.

I don't think it was that devious. More that some fields work out well and some don't.

I don't think anyone that does field design really pays attention to layouts that work and don't work. They should.

I wouldn't mind seeing a return every 6-8 months of a field layout that worked really well.

Mother, is that you?
Maybe it's my devious mind. I'd go....

"fkin nora, how many cameras? how much is it going to cost?.... and we've got no guarantee that we'll get the best shots at the best time? Right then, channel the play into three areas and cut your costs.... joe public wont have a clue... and the editing boys'll make it look the bollox anyway."

"But Master, that would short change paintball - the beautiful game."

"Fck em....they knew what they were getting into!"

You know, summat like that.
