Never assume malevolence when rank stupidity explains the situation just as well :D
Yes, lets just go in there, spend loads of money taking down this tyrrant and then leave, not even looking in the direction of all that lovely crude black......mmmmmmmm...oil.

Are we talking about the same United States??

To be honest if any prior administration was doing this I'd have little trouble buying the idea it was a front to get lots more US military muscle into the Gulf, but the idea of Dubya as a Machiavelian schemer just doesn't ring true. He's made far to many elemental mistakes in Foreign Policy for me to see him as anything more than a blundering amateur

Not that the energy and oil companies who got Dubya into office wouldn't be jerking his strings on this issue at all . . .

Start recycling plastics and plough research into feasible hydrogen engines - bingo - reduced demand for oil and petroleum products and suddenly the oils states start losing their importance (as well as less cr@p in the environment). Oh well, nice dream. Let's hope the cockroaches never discover internal combustion engines or shrinkwrap.

I can see why the exercise continued as there's little point staging one of these things for a week and admitting defeat after day 1, but how they can say they weren't prepared for suicide tactics? They were there in the South Pacific with the kamikazee pilots, right?

Bit like asking a ref to give your armband back because the opposition had the audacity to bunker you.

:D

:D First prize to the man with the wicked avatar!

Funniest book I've ever read.

As for Blair TJ, you have to admire how he hides that collar and leash under the business suits. :) But aside from the endless parade of idiots he appoints to be in charge of things in the UK, he's relatively harmless. (provided you don't travel on the trains, go to school, work in the health service, teaching profession, farming or armed forces or fly.)

Ever hear Bill Hick's rant on Bush snr? God forbid that should happen on these shores. We just have the hooligans. :D (http://www.sacredcow.com/hicks/arizonabay/, track 3, parental advisory on language!)
